Browsers war at the desktop level seemed to be getting predictable. Developers might still swear by Firefox and some older Windows versions like XP, still have Internet Explorer as its best bet, most people are generally in adopting Chrome.

According to StatCounter, Chrome has overtaken Internet Explorer to become the most used browser worldwide.

Usage of Chrome is apparently 31.88% which is a slime lead over Internet Explore which has 31.49%.

One might wonder where Firefox is in this race, it is at third spot with approximately 26% usage.

What could stop Chrome?

Chrome does not give features or options which are entirely very different from say Firefox and dare I say even Internet Explorer. The difference lies in the simplicity of its options. The sync features, which can not just sync bookmarks and extensions but also browsing history or open tabs.

Lately, Chrome is now available on Android and it is already seeing millions of installs very month. If Chrome makes it debut on iOS as expected, it might soon leave all other browser very far behind.

The only thing that could stop Chrome seems to be Google itself, just like Microsoft did with Internet Explorer, when they became complacent and stopped improving the browser.

What are your views on Chrome dislodging IE as the most popular browser? Do drop in your comments.

Following a blog on RSS reader is a great way to keep track of your blog subscriptions. I literally follow hundreds of blogs and never feel overwhelmed thanks to Google Reader.

Reading a post on Google Reader is usually a great experiance, especially if the content is complete. Unfortunately sometimes the content is only a description or introduction and one has to click on the title link of the post to open it on a different tab of the browser.

If you are using Chrome, then you might find Google Reader Inline Extension quite handy.

Open Original Post Links Inside Google Reader

Install the extension on your Chrome.

Now open your Google Reader on Chrome browser and start reading your feeds.

Next to the title you will see a small icon to open the post link inside Google Reader.

Way back in 2004 when Google announced it IPO, I was not really into following tech blogs. I read about it in newspapers and some magazines. I did realize that it was a once in a generation type of company that could start with such small scale and become worth several billions.

Today I am a tech blogger and have covered many aspects of Facebook. As Facebook went public on Nasdaq, it again got a lot of coverage. Even I am filled with wonder at the speed and scale of Facebook’s growth over the years.

Technology is the only sector where companies can be worth only a few thousand dollars worth and rise to become a $100 billion company in only eight years.

An infographic by GigaOm nicely shows how the company’s valuation rose from nothing to become probably one of the most valued companies in the world today.

The real value of Facebook is still in its potential. Investors think of it as the next big thing in web technology. What are your views on Facebook as a company? Will it remain as dominant as ever in say 5 years from now? Do drop in your comments.

Google is making changes to search results. No, these are not algorithm changes to improve the search results which usually only SEO experts and website owners care about.

This is a more visual change that shows more intelligently linked results. As seen in the image below, people using Google.com and using English, will see in depth information on certain search queries.

The knowledge graph shows some basic information and most importantly links to what other people search for.

This is a lot like related links but stuff people are actually searching for.

Here is a video of Google explaining the knowledge graph.

Is Google getting back to basics?

The search tool is a refreshing new feature thought up by Google. Google has brought out some interesting search tools like Google Realtime (which it has discontinued), Wonderwheel and Flight search. But lately it was obsessed with only social integration across all its web services. I personally have never found social search as particularly helpful.

Maybe with Google’s Knowledge Graph it is getting back to basics and concentrating on serving up more helpful search options and tools for users. That said it might make the search result page look cluttered.

What do you think about Google’s Knowledge Graph? Do drop in your comments

The browsers are soon set to move from computers to mobiles and tablets. According to Business Insider, Google is planning to roll out a Chrome browser app for the iOS platform this year. At the moment Safari is Apple’s default browser for iOS and all links users click on open automatically on Safari.

Earlier this year Google brought out Chrome beta for Android 4.0.

I use an Android and liked using Chrome browser which is still in beta. It can be synced with my Chrome browser running on my laptop. Chrome does have a fantastic developer base around thanks to it’s Chromium project.

It has retained its speed and minimal look with a wealth of options underneath. The near seamless synchronization options of Chrome, will probably interest a lot of iPhone or iPad users, who might be using Chrome on their computers.

Also at the moment, for all the money Google makes out of searches and ads served through Safari on iOS, they have to shell out a cut to Apple. If these ads were served through Chrome, Google would not need to shell out anything to Apple.

Is Apple the new Microsoft in the Browser Wars?

Apple probably plans to not allow other browsers form being set as default browser for their iOS platforms. That sounds a lot like it’s one time favorite foe Microsoft, which did the same for Internet Explorer on Windows.

I must say, this is not a scientific research on my part but most people I know who use iPhones or iPads, are actually not such big fans of Safari. More interestingly most seem to like using Chrome.

What are your views on Google’s plan for a Chrome browser for iOS? DO drop in your comments

At times I need to refer to a tab I have open on my laptop’s Chrome browser. Chrome recent stable release has a feature that allows you to synchronize even open tabs on different machines.

Upgrade to the latest Stable version of Chrome and sync your browsers. Users can access it on ‘Other Devices’ menu on new tab of Chrome.

Features of Synchronizing Open Tabs with Chrome

Users can access their open tabs on multiple computers as long as they sign-in with the same Google account.

Not only just the webpages on that particular tab is synced but even the browsing history, which allows users to click on back and visit the previous page from a different page.

This should work across different platforms where Chrome is compatible. This includes and device running on Android 4.0 thanks to the Chrome app.

Here is the Chrome video explaining syncing open tabs:

I have always wondered if Chrome is going to become the default browser for Android OS at some point of time. When Android Market was renamed as Google Play, it promised a seamless and synchronized experience.

I am sure having open tabs synchronized will be quite productive for people who work across different computers and Android devices. If you like using Chrome on multiple devices, you might like to see how to share desktops remotely with Chrome on your computer.

Almost fourteen months ago, I wrote about the IECountdown – which was like Microsoft’s official goodbye to IE6. It was a good initiative by Microsoft, which is still trying to get rid of the bad reputation it received because of a browser (IE6) stuck in time.

Last year, Internet Explorer 6 still accounted for 12% of the world’s browser market. I decided to check on some stats and see if things have really changed or is IE6 still proving very difficult for Microsoft to kill off. I decided to use statistics from NetMarketShare the same source that Microsoft uses to show IE6 usage on the IE6 Countdown website.

Some Internet Explorer Shockers!

About 7.1% of the browsers are still on IE6. That is not the surprising part. The browser share of IE6 has grown in the past couple of months from 6.8% in Feb 2012 to 7.1% in April 2012. Usually this share goes up during December when year ending accounts are done on enterprise computers which still often run only on IE6.

China still seems to be the biggest market for IE6. An astounding 23.8% of the browsers in China are IE6.

Internet Explorer was shipped as a default browser with Vista almost half a decade ago. Strangely more people still use IE6 when compared to IE7.

Even though we are on version 10 for IE, the most popular version is Internet Explorer 8, which was released in 2009.

Internet Explorer has a very fragmented market share based on their browser versions. For example, most Firefox and Chrome users are on the latest versions of their browser. On Chrome, users do not even really notice when their browsers automatically updates to newer versions.

I must say that Microsoft has recently woken up to the horrendous reputation of IE. It even has called it the ‘Browser we love to hate’ in a advertisement campaign. Hopefully the recent spike in IE6 usage is just a blip before its eventual demise.

Do drop in your comments.

Last year while reading Steve Jobs official biography by Walter Isaacson, I came across the real angst that Apple had against Google regarding Android. Apprently, Steve Jobs felt that Android had ripped off Apple’s iPhone device.

It is also a well known fact that the Android OS, underwent a transformation for sorts after the iPhone was released. Most developers agree that Android has pretty much ripped off the look and feel of iPhone in recent years.

A blogger Steven Troughton Smith, managed to get his hands on a pre-iPhone Android device called ‘Sooner’.
Ever wondered what Android looked like before iPhone was released? Well here it is.

This is the main screen of the phone.

What was Android like in the pre-iPhone era?

Simple. Android OS seemed to be resembling Blackberry phones a lot more than say iPhones. This was because the ‘look and feel’ of the BlackBerry phone with physical keys was more popular, back in 2007.

When iPhone was released and became the next big thing, while making it necessary that all smartphones become touch screen phones, Android today resembles the iOS layout a lot more.

It must be noted, that Google was never really looking to create a phone device and hence had to cater their OS for what manufacturers would actually want. If Blackberry was setting the standard with its layout back then, Android had to resemble it a lot more to interest manufacturers to adopt Android. The same for iPhone which set the standard for how touch-screens phones should be.

What are your views on the iPhone vs Android debate? Which do you prefer? Do drop in your comments.

Google+ started out pretty much as a much better designed copy of Facebook. The user-interface and privacy options certainly earned it some approval but people in general did not flock to it in droves. That is because, you cannot dislodge a leader (read Facebook) by just creating a clone of it.

Google seems to be realizing this and has started leveraging its one truly different product called Hangouts.
Yesterday, Google announced that users can publicly broadcast their Hangouts.

How to start Public Broadcast of Hangouts!

Start a hangout with your Google+ friends. A new option to broadcast Hangouts will be available.

Select it and start with the Hangout. The whole Hangout will be available on your Google+ profile publicly. Google+ users will be able to watch it live.

What makes Hangouts more interesting is that the public Hangouts will also be streamed on your YouTube channel. It can also be embedded on a website or blog.

Check the video below that shows a demo of public broadcast of a Google+ Hangout.

Skype needs to watch out!

I remember writing a post on 5 companies that Google+ could put out of business. One of them was Skype and that is because currently, it is used often to record online interviews. Hangouts could potentially replace Skype and its relevancy very quickly.

What are your views on Public Broadcasting of Hangouts? Do drop in your comments.
