Best Sites To Compare Blogs, Forums, Wikis, CMS, Messengers and more!

If you are hearing term Comparison Matrix for the first time, then it is a analytical way to describe and compare various attributes and characteristics of different items. In simple words, for a particular goal comparison matrix helps you choose best option!

In this post I am sharing list of such comparison matrix sites which I have bookmarked and using from long time…

#1. Blogging SoftwaresWeblogMatrix can be used to compare many self-hosted as well as downloadable blogging software at once. Do not forget to check its search feature if you want to find a solution as per your requirement.

Check one of the hottest comparison – WordPress v/s Blogger.

#2. Forum SoftwareForumMatrix can be used to compare various forums aka bulletin board softwares. It also have a search feature but most important is its choice wizard feature which I think every comparison matrix site should provide.

Have a look at phpBB v/s bbPress – comparison of two free and open source forum softwares. One of these will be soon used for Devils Workshop forum!

#3. Wiki SoftwaresWiki Matrix can be used to find best wiki software. In terms of options, it beats all other comparison matrix sites with search option, choice wizard and markup comparison facility.

Check comparison of MediaWiki v/s Midgard-Wiki v/s TikiWiki v/s WackoWiki.

#4. CMS Software – There are many CMS (Content Management System) comparison sites but CMS Matrix is the best and only place I use. You can compare more than 850 CMS here. It have a search feature also but no choice wizard interface.

With 850+ CMS there you may find its hard to find best.Try comparison of Drupal, Joomla & Mambo – best 3 free & open-source CMS softwares. Also please share your finding as I am confused between these three CMS from long time.

# 5. Instant MessengersCompare IM let you compare & search various instant messengers. It also have a search feature.

You can test comparison of Pidgin, Trillian & Miranda or read our review on them.

This is one my most favorite topic so I often write about them in messenger channel.

Hide Complete Orkut Profile! [New Orkut Bug]

Important Update: This is fixed NOW. So I am closing comments for this post

Long time back I wrote about hiding your profile name on orkut. Yes it was something to write about as by default you can not left your orkut profiles’ first and last name field empty.

Now comes a simple bug which hides complete orkut profile as shown below…

# Steps To Hide:

  1. Go to Orkuts manage stuff page or click here.
  2. You will see a URL field on that page. Enter in that field.
  3. Press Add button. That it!

Here comes screenshot…

# Steps To UnHide: (works in firefox 2.x only)

  1. Go to Orkuts manage stuff page or click here.
  2. You will see a My Feeds section at the bottom of that page.
  3. Click the remove button next to feed we have added above!

Here comes screenshot…

# Technical Details

If you look at source of hideme.xml you can see title field have a script tag!

Next all contents are there if you look at source code of hidden profile pages, then…

>> Here is what exactly went wrong:

  • First thing feeds have no restriction on their title length.
  • On profile pages orkut shows feeds added to that account in left sidebar.
  • Now left sidebar is of fixed width so orkut has to truncate long feed titles. So if feed title is longer than 13 character, then only first 13 character is displayed from feed title followed by ellipsis […]
  • So in hideme.xml case first 13 characters are – <script>promp
  • Now while parsing browser encounters a <script> tag but no matching </script> tag and thus HTML source rendering stops in left sidebar only. Thus main portion of profile is not parsed at all!

>> Solution:

  • A very simple but highly costly solution is too validate feeds when user adds them! This I guess will not be acceptable by user as well due to delay caused by validations. Also while working at orkutfeeds I see today’s valid feed may become invalid tomorrow and so vice-versa!
  • So next solution is to do HTML entity escape on selected feed title portion as there is nothing wrong is truncating long feed title.
  • In PHP this can be easily achieved using a function htmlspecialchars. I hope there must be an equivalent in ASP also.

>> Implications

  • As you can manage your stuff only this is not serious as of now!
  • But use of script tag in title field suggest somebody discovered this bug while trying to find a XSS hole.
  • Now I guess orkut is lucky this time as truncation saved them. Otherwise this could have been ground for a perfect XSS attack! May be it is… 😉

How To Deal With Your Duplicate Profile/Impersonation on Orkut!

This article is my best possible help for all orkut users, victim of some sort of impersonation. It will show you how to deal with your duplicate profile on Orkut.

To start with, here is what Orkut’s Impersonation Notification says,

“To file an impersonation claim, you must demonstrate that you are the person being impersonated. To be considered impersonation, the profile name will likely need to match (or be very similar to) your legal name.”

Point to be noted – Offending profile must have name similar to (if not exact) your legal name not your Orkut profile name.

There are few more things mentioned on Orkut help page. Read them carefully…

# Preparation Part…

  • If you are not Orkut User – You can still file a claim without opening account on Orkut. But to get Orkut Profile Name & URL you have to seek help of a friend who have account on Orkut.
  • Scanning a photo ID – As its mandatory to attach a valid photo ID, get it scanned as clearly as possible. If you are good at digital photography then you may try taking a snap of photo ID. But using scanner is always better! Also I will not recommend use of your college ID as its less authentic compare to driving license or national ID (such as voters ID in India). Update: Uploading photo is not required anymore.
  • Orkut Profile Name & URL – If you have never used orkut or very unfamiliar with its technical jargon then check following screenshot. I have highlighted orkut profile name and orkut profile URL below which will be needed to file impersonation claim.

# Filing an Impersonation Form…

Now open impersonation form. It has total 9 fields. Some are optional.

  1. Your legal name: Name of the document you are attaching.
  2. Your email address: Give an email address where orkut can contact you.
  3. Email address (confirm):   (Same as above)
  4. Your orkut profile name (if you have one): (not needed if you have no orkut account)
  5. Your orkut profile URL (if you have one):  (not needed if you have no orkut account)
  6. The fake orkut profile name: Copy and paste fake orkut profile name (see screenshot)
  7. The fake orkut profile URL: Copy and paste fake orkut profile URL (see screenshot)
  8. Please attach … photo ID : Upload scanned document here.
  9. Additional details (if needed): This field is optional but please try to give some important details which can help Orkut identify you as real an offending profile as fake.

After filling all details and submitting a form you will get following response…

“Thank you for submitting your report. We will investigate and take action as necessary. Please note that we will not contact you unless we need more information to review your claim. If you’ve reported a profile and continue to see it after a week, it’s likely that it did not meet our conditions for removal.”

# What if above fails…

  • Ask your friend to report fake profile and making an impersonation claim on your behalf. This is not allowed by Orkut.
  • Try or ask anyone to hack fake account. You may land yourself in legal troubles.

DO …

No matter what happens, do not indulge in any criminal act like hacking or password stealing. Its always better to trust local legal authorities than a stranger claiming to help you in virtual world.

(Personal Note: Consider this as my replay to all mails/scraps/comments about the issue. I can not and will not hack any orkut users account for anyone. Not even for money or any other reason. So stop making me such idiotic offers.)

How many Gmail Addresses You Have! [Gmail Trick]

Most Gmail users will answer one! Rest will answer 2-3 or little more. But in reality, all Gmail users have infinite Gmail addresses even if they have registered for only one Gmail account!

All these addresses act as aliases to Gmail address you use and can be divided in three categories as explained below. At the end some smart tips are given to make use of these aliases to get more from your Gmail accounts!

So lets start with aliases now…

#1. alias

Every have a alias by default. So even if you send me mail at it will be delivered to my inbox as shown in following screenshot… is official domain for service in Germany, Austria and the United Kingdom. More information about this is available on Gmail’s wikipedia page.

This makes your address count: 2

#2. dot [.] alias

Gmail ignores dot [.] character in email address. Means all of the following are same…

  • and all combination of dots

Check these screenshots…

More information about this is available on Gmail’s Help Center.

This will raise your address count considerably. But still you can count them!

#3. Plus [+] alias

Now first look at this example –

Now this is also same as –

Gmail ignores plus [+] character and anything after that in ID part!

So is same as

What about count now? 😉

#4. Combination of aliases

Yep, you can use above aliases in any possible combination. Check following screenshot, I used all three of above at once… 😉

Are you still counting? 😀

Now you may be wondering what to do with these virtual infinite email addresses (or aliases). First give your original email address without plus and dots to your friends and other real people only. Now out of aliases I personally recommend to go for plus aliases as they are more readable.

Now comes some tips…

#1. Better Organizing Emails…

First create aliases like below…

Next create labels like social, forums, biz, etc and finally create an individual filter for each alias + label combo!

This may sound a lot of work but once its done, it saves your time forever! 🙂

#2. Catching Spammers…

Many websites ask for email addresses. If you suspect the website may spam your inbox in feature, use a Gmail alias instead of real email address.

If you get spam mails targeted to alias in future you may assume website is affiliated with spammers!

Note this method is technically not full proof as website may strip extra characters from email addresses… 🙁

There can be more smart usage of this email aliases. If you have one, please let us know! 🙂

Check Who is Invisible/Online on Yahoo Messenger!

One of my Orkut friend Niharika Arora asked me on Orkut how to check if a person is online on yahoo messenger? I googled for sometime and here are my tested results…

First let me tell you coolest thing about hacks in this tutorial. They do not require a targeted yahoo user to be on your friend list! Now..

To Check Online Status:

This will work only if user is online and NOT into invisible mode. Invisible part is covered later… 😉

First Official Way: Go to Yahoos profile directory and check target user profile. Say you want to check status of someone (where someone is Yahoo ID). Now suffix someone to URL so it will become Open final URL in browser and the profile will have status indicator!

Another Way: There are many simple sites which takes Yahoo ID and returns status of Yahoo user. I have tested successfully!

This part is not a hack but official Yahoo feature documented here.

If you want PHP code to create a status-checker page of your own, this page may help you.

To Check Invisible Status:

I tested and used a third-party program named Buddy-Spy! Unlike above this requires a Yahoo account. I strongly discourage using your own Yahoo ID. You better create a new one! 😉

Following is a screenshot of my test result, which says everything.

Also point to note is that I was not in friend-list of Yahoo account used for testing! 😀

Update: Try Its tested, working fine and web-based! (Added October 7, 2008)
