How many times have you been irritated by the useless posts and invites from various Facebook applications, you get on your wall? Have you ever wondered that you might be able to stop all these at once, and not blocking the endless queue one-by-one? If yes, then this post is definitely for you.

Various applications and games on Facebook are written in such API that sends auto notifications and offers to all the people in the friend list of the person playing it. But not all of us log in to Facebook just to play games. For many of us, Facebook is the indispensible medium of net connect with our friends and relatives. And in recent times, it has become a necessity.

Anyways, coming to the point, the thing that comes to rescue us from all the undesirable things posted automatically on our walls is Greasemonkey.

And for people, who don’t know what it is, it is an Add-on for the mighty web browser, Mozilla Firefox. With Greasemonkey, you have the power to customize any website on the internet, the way YOU want it to be. If you don’t like the color theme of this website, you can even change that for you!

Greasemonkey works with the concept of Userscripts. There is a huge community dedicated to the development and implementation of user scripts for Greasemonkey. Just head on to http://www.userscripts.org to find a user script that matches your interest and customize and website you want! Or better, you can write your own script if you don’t get a ready-made one from there.

Coming to purify your Facebook experience, the user script is called Facebook Purity. And as the name suggests, it indeed makes your Facebook experience, just pure! No more spams on you wall and there are just LOTS of other features you can get. This Greasemonkey script removes all messages posted by applications to your homepage. It gets rid of messages about quizes etc, basically all messages from any applications created by external developers. Just leaving messages from the original Facebook apps such as status updates, wall posts, links, notes, photos, etc behind.

PLUS: You also have a single click option to show the things, FB purity has blocked. So, in case, you have some spare time, you can just click and all the application invites will be visible on your wall!

Integrate AdSense In Your Blog’s RSS feed

Google Adsense is a service which almost every blogger on the earth uses. For some it’s the primary source of income. With Google Adsnese, bloggers earn money by placing Google Ads on their blogs/website. Whenever users click them, the blog owner gets paid by Google. Adsense is one of the best revenue generating program for blogger.

We guess, you are well aware of how to place Adsense ads on your blog. Today, we are going to tell you how you can integrate Adsense ads in your blog’s RSS feeds and get some extra cash by clicks on them.

To setup ads for your RSS feeds, navigate to the following link after logging into your Adsense account:

https://www.google.com/adsense/aff-settings

After that, you’ll be greeted by Adsense for Feeds dashboard. Here, you can choose from various options for ads according to your convenience. These options are:

Name : The name for your ad unit
Size : The size of your ad unit
Ad Type : Text or Image Ads
Frequency : How rapidly you want your ads to be displayed
Post Length : Here you can tell google, for which post length, ads are to be displayed
Position : You can set position for your ads here

After customizing options, you can add your channel to the account and burn the feed.

That’s it. Adsense is now configured for your RSS feeds and readers, who use feeds to read the contents of your website would also be treated with ads. Another way to get some extra cash

Voice chat in facebook

There have been rumors all around the internet that facebook voice chat is coming soon and will be hitting facebook. Well, oficially we are still not having a voice chat feature from facebook. But you can still use your voice to chat over the facebook chatrooms by using an application called the “Talkr Voice Chat“. This application allows users to create and join chat rooms and user their voice to chat over them. To get going, you have to do following things:

1. Search for “Talkr Voice Chat” on facebook or click here.
2. Allow it for special permissions

3. See it in action

Give your feedbacks to the developer in case you face any difficulties and keep hoping that facebook would soon launch an official voice chatting service.

Youtube url shortner

I have to say, this year is going to be the year of url shortners! With giants like google and facebook entering the url shortening business, now it’s the turn of youtube to join the caravan. Youtube has hit the internet with it’s new url shortner called [Youtu.be].

The only difference would be that the youtube url shortening service will exclusively be for the youtube videos. With the introduction of this new service, there will be more room for developers to show their imagination. The can now get custom urls for thumbnails, embedded videos and much more.

Now, to use this new url shortening service from youtube, take any youtube video url

“for example, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xxxxxx”

and replace the

“http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=” part with “http://youtu.be/”.

Your youtube urls will automatically be shortened and the new link will be redirected to the original video.

I wonder, if this will turn other video sites like metacafe etc. to launch their own url shortener! Only time will tell.

Recover all your google accounts passwords

Can you imagine life without google talk, picassa or gmail notifier? In these times, a one minute outrage of google services results in panic all over the internet. People across the globe, rely on the google services for their day to day internet activities. Google has provided us with many useful utilities. But all these utilities work from a single encrypted system on your local computer so that you don’t have to enter your username and password everytime you login to any of the following services:

Google Talk
Google Picassa
Google Desktop Seach
Gmail Notifier
Internet Explorer (all versions from 4 to
Google Chrome

But, imagine the case, if you forget the password of your main account. All these services will be locked out and your life would definitely be miserable. To make you safe and happy, there is an application which recovers all your locally stored google account passwords for these services. The application is called GooglePasswordDecryptor, and can be downloaded from here

How it works:

GooglePasswordDecryptor works on the principle that all the google services use a central encrypted database on your computer to fetch your username and password everytime you sign in to these services. Now, it uses different techniques to decrypt these stored passwords to plain text and present them before you in a window

Skype is Sold

Finally, the days of deals for out ever loved VOIP communication software, Skype have ended and it has been sold. Skype, which was originally acquired by the online auction giant, eBay has been sold and the deal is completed. The confirmation is given on the Official Skype Blog

The investor group is led by Silver lakes. The deal valued Skype at a massive exchange of $2.75 B, with eBay still retaining approximately 33% of it.

eBay purchased on the first hand in September 2005, for $3.1 billion and worked hard to integrate it into the mainstream business model.

Would it make any difference to me?

Of course, yes. Since skype is now owned by a new company, expect a more feature packed and reloaded skype.

The impacts

With Skype being the most popular VOIP client in the world, maybe more companies will jump into the market. The competition will elevate the quality of service. If that doesn’t happens, Skype will be much better than what it presently is. Anyway, I believe it is a win-win situation for the customers!

Keeping your data safe on the clouds

Data loss is a nightmare for any of us. Imagine your hard disk crashing overnight for no reason and you, loosing all your hard earned data in a split second (It actually, has happened with me, once).

Scary? Well, keeping backup is the fool proof idea to keep your data safe. Today, I’m going to tell you about the best-of-the-best data backup and sync tools available on the internet which will enable you not only to back up your data, but also to access it from anywhere in the world.

CrashPlan : It is available for Windows/Linux/Mac OS/Open Solaris. Extremely user friendly interface. You can back your data up offline by downloading their software and the software will automatically sync your data to the servers when you get online.
Mozy : Available for Windows/Mac, It has a basic FREE pack with 2 GB of online storage for you backups. The major plus point is, it is an automatic backing up system. Once you install Mozy in your computer, and it will take backups all by itself in real time. You can however, set the frequency of the backups taken.
DropBox : This is my favourite backup tool. I use it personally because it gives me seamless integration to both linux and windows backups. It is available for Windows/Linux/Mac and with a basic free plan of 2GB online storage. The best thing about drop box is, whenever you sign in for dropbox, you will get a referall link. If your friends sign up to dropbox using that link of yours, you get additional storage for your DropBox account.
Jungle Disk : Jungle Disk takes a different approach to backup on several different levels. Rather than offering a flat rate pricing for unlimited storage, Jungle Disk operates on a fee system. You pay $2 a month per account plus a fee per GB of data used. The fee structure per GB is currently: $0.15 for storage, $0.10 for upload, and $0.17 for download.
Carbonite : Available for Windows and Mac, they have a simple pricing plan: $54.95 for a year of unlimited storage from a single computer. Like Mozy, Carbonite also offers block-level incremental backup to speed up the backup process. You can access your files through a web-based interface when you are away from home, and you can use the Carbonite application to restore all or some of your files at any time.

Reading the website headers

Websites are the life and soul of the internet. Like living souls are made of cells, internet is made of websites. Ever since, you have been introduced to the internet, you have been writing that [http] and [www] on the url bar and then going on the desired web page. Today, we will have a look on what that stuff really means and exploring some fantastic secrets too!

Whenever you enter a website url, your web browser sends a request to the web server. Behind the scene, the HTTP protocol is doing the trick. It is nothing, but a set of rules or language in which the web server and the web browser communicate. Now, every website has headers. They are not visible in normal browsing, and you need special tools/add ons to view them. But they contain a wealth of information about a website. And often, this is a place where real geek webmaster hide some info or just casual easter egg jokes!

Well, to view website headers, you’ll need Live HTTP Headers add-on for Firefox. Other way is, to downloading an additional utility The curl utility is available on Linux, Mac OS X, and even Windows.

To view the web headers, simply start the Firefox addd on and type the web address. It will automatically catch the headers. Other method, just go to command line and type:

curl -I webaddress.com

Now comes the interesing part! You will be amazed to know, what is hidden behind the website headers of many popular websites. Let me make you see some of them.

If you type in curl –I slashdot.org, you’ll see that they embed random quotes from Futurama into the headers:

Twitter changes the question

“What are you doing?” is the hallmark question with which, Twitter entered the internet and created a revolution in the way, people communicate. However, today, Twitter has changed the basic question from What are you doing? to “What’s Happening?”

The reason that seconds the decision of twitter to do so, is largely said to be the change in social stuffs. The previous question was limited to you and your personal life. And according to the twitter blog, “What are you doing” is no more, the relevant social question. When you’re sipping a coffee, and someone asks “What are you doing?”, the answer comes, I’m sipping coffee. While, there are zillions of activities going around you about which you can tweet.

Ok. Fine. But will it make a difference to me?

In a way, it will. Before the new idea, all the tweeting was about personal statuses. But now, it will be more dynamic. Now the idea is not only to tweet about you but also about your surrounding and the events happening around you.

The future?

Presently, there are limits on content what you can pour over twitter. And most importantly, the 140 character limit. Maybe, in near future, Twitter may lift that limit. That will open the gates for new ideas to bloom. We can only wait and watch!

So, that was the idea behind changing the basic question from “What are you doing?” to “What’s Happening?”

How many times have you encountered the situation that you really wanted to listen to a song and that song isn’t in your iPod? Rather, it is lying in that lonely computer back at your home. If that has happened to you anytime, we are presenting a solution for that. Today, we will tell you how to turn your computer into a radio station so that you can reach your music database from just anywhere in the world.

There are many possible sharing solutions you may think of, like file sharing etc. but have you ever thought of streaming your media? Streaming is the technology which enable people to hear your music over the internet without downloading anything. Another plus point of doing this is, there can be a single PC storing all the music and there can be multiple PCs connecting to it. This way, this technology can prove to be a massive disk saver.

All this can be achieved by downloading a free Java-based application called Sockso

Features of Sokso

No installation required. Just unzip and go.
Share any file format.
Java platform.
Allow or block any user from downloading your content.

Simple process for setting up Sokso on your PC

Download and unzip Sockso to a folder.
Connect your computer to a home network / the Internet (depending on where you want to serve the music files).
Click on the “Run Sockso” shortcut to launch the program.
Select the music files / folders that you want to share.

Share your computer IP address and Sockso port number (default:4444) with your friends e.g. http://> . They can use this address and listen to your collection using their web browser.
