I think you all are aware of OpenDNS as there have been lots of blog posts about it. Here, I am discussing all the areas where you can use it as an alternative. Before that, let’s briefly look into what DNS is and why OpenDNS?

What is DNS?

DNS stands for Domain Name System, whose task is to translate alphabetic domain name [http://google.com] to numeric (IP Address) like [209.85.171.100] for locating and addressing to appropriate devices world wide. Simply it is like a phone book of the Internet. All the major ISP‘s maintain their own DNS at their dedicated DNS Servers to resolve the user requests.

Read more about DNS.

Why OpenDNS?

A San Francisco company named OpenDNS , which hosts a free phone book ( Public DNS Servers), provides better and more reliable services than major Internet service providers. OpenDNS does the same as ISP, but in a better way because they are dedicated to this job and most importantly, they are free.

If you are not happy with your ISP’s DNS then you can configure your computer, router or DNS Servers to use OpenDNS by just following some simple steps.

If you are running a school, college or a small organization, you need web content filtering, to block user access to high risk websites as well as inappropriate websites. You can use firewall or some content filtering tools like Websense and ISA. But this option adds a huge budget to your organization and is also very complex.

OpenDNS provides very good content filtering. You can choose it at different levels. This functionality may not be as comprehensive as other solutions. But for organizations with a smaller budget, it is more than good.

You can also block individual domains which are not covered by default. For example: if you like to block Google served ads then just add – http://doubleclick.net/ and http://googlesyndication.com/. It will block most of the Google ads.

But on behalf of all bloggers , I don’t recommend you to do so

(Sources: wikipedia , opendns-start , openDNS, double-click, googlesyndication)

Airtel, TataIndicom and Reliance now have an asterisk (*) [Conditions apply] on their unlimited Broadband plans. Following the metered broadband trend from International players, they are also providing unlimited Broadband attached with
“Fair Usage Policy“ [..lol...]

Under this scheme if you violate their policy, your speed may be reduced to half or you have to pay some more bucks. Worse, they may terminate your connection.

There are a lot of threads you can find on Broadband forums regarding this step, so be aware and use the BB carefully respective to your ISP .

You are not going to get all that you are paying for. [Unfair policy]

Check what unlimited means

TataIndicom Unlimited Means

64 kbps 5GB
128 kbps 20GB
256 kbps 45GB
384 kbps 70GB
512 kbps 80GB

If you go beyond your limit, you will get a call from Tata Customer Care ( ) and they will suggest you to reduce the usage or upgrade to a higher plan. If not, they will terminate your broadband connection.

Many of us have a fear of fraud while using our Credit/Debit Card for online shopping – it may be stored at the merchant website or it may be charged extra, etc.

Most of the merchant sites are still not accepting Debit Cards. You can’t think about online shopping if you are not having any Credit Card and your friend is not interested in giving his/her Credit Card number

Students can’t own a Credit Card, as they are not eligible to have it, then what should they do for purchasing a domain, for web hosting or buying gadgets at e-bay.

Virtual Credit Cards play a great role in this scenario, as using them is easy and they are safe and secure. Most of the banks are now providing such kind of services. I am using the HDFC NetSafe Card for two years. It is very convenient and safe and till now I didn’t have any problem with it. So I would like to share it with Devils Workshop.

What is a Netsafe Card?

NetSafe is a unique kind of Virtual Credit Card service by HDFC Bank, that offers complete security while shopping on the online merchant sites, without revealing your actual HDFC Bank Credit/Debit Card details. You can decide the NetSafe Card limit according to your useage, and it can be used one time only at one merchant site.

How Does It Work?

This service is free. The only thing is that you should have an HDFC Credit/Debit Card for it.You can get a Debit Card simply by opening a regular savings account with the HDFC Bank, then register your Credit/Debit Card for NetSafe service on the HDFC Bank website.

You can then generate a NetSafe card and use it for online shopping only. The limit of the card is the amount set by you. The purchase will appear in your statement just like any other transaction. NetSafe card is valid for maximum 48 hours and after which the unutilized amount will be credited back to your Credit/Debit Card account. If you don’t want to use the card, you can cancel it, and the amount will be credited back to you.

HDFC Bank has a very good Video Demo about NetSafe card: Netsafe Demo
