It all really boils down to the nature of the website and also the type of content on it. If you are a blogger, I am sure you must have secretly wished for a Google employee to actually take a look and give you some advise on what are the best ways to get your site crawled and results show up higher on Google.

With India Site Clinic that is exactly what Google will be doing for website owners.

What is India Site Clinic?

Website owners can registered for India Site Clinic, which will pick up a limited number and give advise on how to improve search rankings for all the websites.

Webmasters have to register at this link and fill out the form. They will also need to make sure their website is registered with Google Webmaster tools.

The submission are open only upto 14th May 2012. It might be a good idea to take a chance at getting free valuable advice from Google about your website.

Do note that if Google thinks your website has a unique issue, it might use it as a test case on it Site Clinic blog. You can read more about it at the Google India blog post.

Other than registering it might be a good idea to follow India Site Clinic just to learn what exactly Google expects from website owners.

But then ranking a blog post higher based on keyword density rather than good content seemed rather unfair of Google. Apparently keyword density is something bloggers should not get too overtly concerned about.

Focusing on that level of detail is not as helpful  as compared to reading it aloud, seeing if it makes sense…

Search Engine Optimization is Not Evil!

I am not a SEO expert and have never obsessed about optimizing my posts for search engines. That said, I am not suggesting Search Engine Optimization is evil. It is a legitimate way of learning how to best make your blog visible to Google and other search engines. I think that a blogger should ideally not be obsessed with SEO at the cost of writing good content.

I usually use these 5 steps to write a post which usually takes care of a lot of best practices suggested by most SEO experts.

Interestingly 39% of these top blogs are using self-hosted WordPress while 9% are using WordPress hosted service. That means more blogs use WordPress hosted than any other popular platform.

Movable Type which was quite popular once as a blogging platform is losing steam fast. This might because the top 100 blogs might have changed and chances are newer blogs are more prone to use WordPress.

Tumblr over the past year has really grown a lot. I wrote about how it has a lot more pageviews than WordPress.com or Blogspot.com blogs. While WordPress.com actually dominates with more visitors than other blogging platforms, clearly showing it seems to be better from a search engine optimization perspective.

This blog too started on Blogger and later migrated to self-hosted WordPress. If you are blogging which platform are you using? Do drop in your comments.

Why did we move?

rtPanel has been growing rapidly (already crossed 5000+ downloads mark). The optimized mark-up of rtPanel framework, improves the site speed and SEO capability. DevilsWorkshop being a part of rtCamp, we decided to use it as a case study to show rtPanel’s capability.  It was a perfect example to consider, as it has a huge reader base, vast content, multiple authors and different functional elements.

We also used this opportunity to rebrand the website with even better looks and refreshing design. Read this to know more about re-design.

Devilsworkshop was earlier running over rtBase framework (internally used in rtCamp). It was later evolved over 2 years of experiential learning with more than 1000+ WordPress projects. The ultimate goal of bringing it to public, was later achieved with launch of rtPanel.

A Good Friday:

On a fine morning of a Friday (February 5, 2012), we just decided to switch Devils’ Workshop on rtPanel. The development was done on live site and within 3 working days it was implemented.

The results are beyond our expectations and it concluded that rtPanel framework can truly do wonders. The increase in traffic was due the optimized markup and default integration of Yoast SEO plugin. The increased traffic ultimately lead to increase in Google Adsense revenue by whooping 85%.

Google AdSense obviously sees a lot opportunities for displaying ads on websites viewed on a mobile device. It has developed a free online tool called How to Go Mobile, which helps you check how your website performs on a mobile phone.

• Enter the URL of your website you want to check and select what you intend to do with your website. This includes options like content publisher or if the website is used to generate leads or about a business that is online as well as offline.
• The online tool will carry out relevant checks and show up details like Loading Speed, how images appear, text format and navigation.
• In the above screenshot, you might see that Devils’ Workshop passed all the requirements except that the text might need a bit of work.

This is not for only blogs from India, but all blogs that are looked up from an IP address in India. While if you are using your own personal domain hosted on Blogspot, your domain name will remain the same.

For example that Google’s official blog which has the original URL as

http://googleblog.blogspot.com

but for Indian users, it shows up as

http://googleblog.blogspot.in/

Why is Google re-directing Blogspot blogs?

Well Twitter has decided to censor tweets based on country specific basis, so that they can conform to local laws regarding content. Google is doing pretty much the same thing.

As Google explains in the this support forum, it is trying to conform to local law agency suggestions on taking down or blocking certain content at the same time keeping it online otherwise.

For example, if a URL is deemed offensive in India and the court orders Google to remove it, it can block the link for Indian readers but it would still be available from other countries.

Will it affect Google Page Rank or search rankings?

I tried to run a Google search for .in domain of Google’s official page. The query I entered was

“site:http://googleblog.blogspot.in/”

and it returned no results. So I guess we are not going to see two separate URLs for the same content showing up in the link.

Google will probably (hopefully) make sure that it does not affect many blogs and the search juice they get.

There are many unofficial AdSense Add-ons and other tools but Google has recently rolled out an official extension.

• This extension can allow users a quick peek into their AdSense earnings. It displays the earnings for the particular day, from previous day and the current month and the previous month.
• Download the AdSense toolbar from here. You will need to grant this extension access to your AdSense account. You might not want to do this on a shared computer or a public one.
• It also displays how much money do the custom type of Ad banners along with websites.

The first thing that struck me as strange about Blogger, compared to WordPress was that it did not have threaded comments. This makes the comments look very disorganized. Blogger today announced threaded comments for all users.

Settings for Threaded Comments on Blogger

• If you have comments enabled on the blogger, then threaded commenting is enabled automatically on your blog.
• If you had comments turned off then go to Blogger Settings.
• In settings select ‘Full’ for Blog Feed. Under Post and Comments Settings select Embedded for Comment Location.
• Save your Settings and your Blogger blog will now feature threaded comments.

Catching up with WordPress.com?

When it comes to blogging platforms Blogger is surely a lot behind other platforms. How far behind Blogger is to WordPress, can be easily understood with the fact that threaded comments were introduced on WordPress.com in early 2009, almost three years ago. Even today WordPress blogs allow commenting using Facebook and Twitter IDs which is a far more efficient way to entice commenting.

It is no wonder that Blogger lags behind Tumblr and WordPress over the last couple of years.

What’s New with WordPress 3.3

• The new WordPress version will allow dragging and dropping files into the WordPress uploader. Support has been added for rar (winrar) and 7z (7Zip) files.
• This version will also feature fly out menus, which will help navigate on the dashboard a lot faster.
• WordPress 3.3 also shows a lot more by combining the old dashboard header with the toolbar.

• There will be no time lag when two people are in edit mode for the same post.
• WordPress 3.3 will also feature the ability to import you Tumblr blog onto WordPress.

Before you update your WordPress 3.3 make sure your theme is compatible with the latest version along with plugins you are using.

Also adding a note  of caution that before any upgrade, it is always a good idea to take a backup.
