Most of the websites now include HTML snippets/buttons of Facebook, Twitter etc. even though they are used to share content, they actually track you all over the web. If you care about privacy, you must have already installed privacy addons like Ghostery, Adblock Plus, but here’s a new addition to your privacy toolkit – Priv3.

Priv3 is different from addons like Ghostery. For example, Ghostery blocks social sharing buttons (+1, Like, Tweet buttons) and other social snippets (Facebook comments, Facebook connect) completely, so you may feel disconnected.

Priv3 protects your privacy by blocking trackers, but still shows social snippets like Facebook Comments, +1, like buttons so you don’t miss any content. Once you interact with the social snippet, it reloads the cookies and tracking starts again, so unless and until you interact with the snippet, the addon keeps blocking the trackers.

One thing which is too disappointing for me is that Priv3 is only available for Firefox, so all I can do is wait for a Chrome version of it. If you’re a Firefox user, check it out and also tell us what you think of it.

Sometimes, I just feel, Firefox is a bit too orthodox, you need to restart after almost installing any add-on and the add ons that work in the stable version may not work in the newer beta versions.

Bloggers like me would definitely want to try Aurora or Nightly builds but actually none of the add ons work in these builds. But fortunately, there’s a method to make any add-on work even in testing builds of Firefox.

Making incompatible add ons work in Aurora and Nightly

Initially, when you install Aurora or Nightly, it’ll check for compatible add ons, if any. After installing, go to the Add ons manager and it’ll show the incompatible add ons there.

Now, head on to Add ons store and get the Add-on Compatibility Checker.

Install it and after restarting Firefox, it will start compatibility checking tests, and after the tests are over (takes not more than 10 seconds), you need to restart once again.

Now, in the Add ons manager you can enable all the incompatible add ons (see image below)

You can also help the Mozilla team by sending them feedback about how the add on works in the testing versions of Firefox. For that, click on Compatibility > Select between This add-on still works and This add on no longer works.

Do you use Firefox Aurora or Nightly? What are your views on them?

Firefox 4 took an eternity in development and in my opinion it was probably 6 months too late. Six months in the tech world is a lot of time. When it comes to browsers the growth of Firefox was being thwarted thanks to Chrome churning out newer updates so often, that they stopped announcing them.

Firefox Beta Features

There is added support for CSS animations .

Previously the Do-not-Track header preference has been moved to increased viewing area in the browser.

It also claims to have improved standards for HTML5, canvas, JavaScript.

The big new change is with support for switching Firefox development channel. Just go to your Help > About Firefox and we see the option to switch development channel.

Firefox is finally waking up to faster updates!

When I started writing on this blog, way back in late 2009, there was talk of how Firefox 4 will change things. It’s final version was released in 2011 March. That was just too much time for a new version.

Chrome managed to keep gaining momentum and other than some specific add-ons, a lot of people do not find any reason to continue with Firefox when compared to Chrome.

With faster updates, it will probably push the developer community around Firefox browser into activity which might lead to better momentum.

What are your views on Firefox’s future? Do drop in your comments.

It is well-known fact that Department of Homeland Security in the US, seize certain domains for copyright infringement.

The controversy has been sometimes these domains are shutdown without notice to the owners.

Mozilla’s was recently asked to remove MafiaaFire, a Firefox add-on which is mainly a redirection add-on. It supposedly un-censors the domains which were taken down illegally.

Mozilla decided that before removing the add-on they wanted their own set of questions answered by Homeland Security in US.

Why were these websites shutdown?

The common reason believed to have been that the websites were infringing on copyright. Typically the suspicions were about online piracy of copyright content.

Many websites which were taken down, still have their status in limbo. That means, that a court order has not ruled against it as illegal and hence the sites ideally should not be shutdown.

Why Mozilla is taking a stand?

Mozilla is taking a stand against this sort of request to remove a add-on probably to not allow it to become a precedent. There have always been fears of internet censorship when governments have tried to remove content from the internet. Mozilla probably standing up for their add-on developers is a better idea than to quickly comply with requests.

On the other hand, I could not see the MafiaaFire extension in the Chrome webstore. The Chrome version can be downloaded directly from MafiaaFire’s own domain.

What are your views? Is Mozilla taking the right stand? Do drop in your comments.

Firefox 4 was supposed to be revolutionary and in some way with certain features like Panorama, Firefox did make some advances. The biggest advantage for Firefox has been browser add-ons and the developer community around it.

Chrome has recently stole the thunder when it comes to browser. Chrome has a simpler interface devoid of clutter and also more importantly is often called the fastest browser around. Firefox 4 has inherited the reputation that it is a drag on the resources along with being slow when it comes to starting.

So now Mozilla has put out a list of slow Add-ons.

Mozilla’s List of Slow Firefox add-ons

Mozilla will automatically perform tests on the top 100 Addons which are downloaded and the results will be displayed.

Soon warnings will show up to alert users about an Add-on beng slow from the add-on gallery itself.

This might all be great news for Firefox fans, but I can see quite a few developers being angry that their add-ons are being targeted unfairly or even that they are being shamed like this in public.

But I guess, Mozilla has no choice but to carry out such an exercise. We can already see that majority of the popular Addons do not work with Firefox 4 and this might push some developers to update their addons which is a necessity.

If you use Firefox, do look up this list and drop in your comments here on your views.

I know it’s pretty uncomfortable going back to Photoshop repeatedly to use the ‘guide’ to see if you have alignments in place. And then thinks a developer who comes out with a Firefox add-on “FoxGuide”. But what to do if you need to use guides easily while looking at the preview of your design in Mozilla Firefox, FoxGuide comes to rescue.

FoxGuide displays horizontal and vertical lines on your web pages exactly like in Photoshop. You can move the lines and even remove them pretty easily just the way it is done in Photoshop. Hence FoxGuide let you organize different objects on your web page easily and give a better feel.

Features at a glance

Guides for a particular page are restored automatically even after you close the tab / browser.

Transparency of the ruler and guide colour are adjustable.

The 10000 pixels long rulers make sure you don’t fall short of it.

I found Magazinify when I was wondering how to read nice articles I found while working. It was usual that due to lack of time, I could not read any articles entirely and had to close the windows to continue my work.

Magazinify is a small Internet-based application available for browsers like Google Chrome and Firefox (those are the two I tested for) and works like a relaxation when you don’t really have time but you still want to read those nice articles. What all you need to do is to press the small Magazinify button placed on your URL bar automatically (you can even place a button to your Toolbar) and it’s done.

The first time you click on the Magazinify button, it asks for your Facebook Login (the only one it supports as of now, Facebook is everywhere! ). Later it won’t be asking you for any kind of Login and clicking the button would just record the page link to be sent to you later.

How it Works

When you click on the Magazinify button, the opened page is scheduled for PDF conversion automatically and is sent as a PDF to your registered email address (the Facebook Email Address by default) and any Advertisements are removed while PDF creation. You can even chose whether you would like the digest to be sent to you daily, weekly or even monthly.

As per my experience, after clicking on the Magazinify button, I received a customized PDF magazine the next day itself. I will post the preview of the magazine very soon. Until then try magazinify for yourself.

Being a ‘blogger’ means your day involves 2 main tasks – writing like a maniac alternated with reading like a manic. Though ‘subscriptions’ as a system serve as a major time saver, it also makes it quite mundane with a regular layout. This Firefox add-on attempts to reinvent that experience for you – Feedly. Its the perfect add-on if you are someone like me – following several blogs, subscriptions, alerts and thirsty for a clean layout to view these.

Feedly is a Firefox add-on which displays all your subscriptions in a magazine-like layout. You need to activate this add-on with your Google account, following which it automatically loads in all your Reader settings on one page. With neat tabs, and predefined groups that you may have created on Google Reader.

How Feedly works:

Download the Feedly add-on from here. After the pop-up opens, click Install Now. Restart your Firefox Browser.

When the browser re-opens, the Feedly home page will open automatically. Notice the green icon now beside the address bar.

At the Feedly Page, login with your Google Account (if you have multiple accounts, then the one you use to receive feeds).

You can now view all your subscriptions in an organized manner, with tabs like – Cover, Digest, Latest or predefined groups that you may have created with Google Reader.

Worth Noting:

Feedly is limited to Google Reader users.

Attaches a mini Feedly which permits easy sharing on Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Tumblr, etc.

I think Feedly does a good job at helping the specific market it caters to. I happen to be in that category of Google Reader and Firefox users so it did make following multiple blogs easier for me. What do you think about it? Do let me know what you think about it. Drop your comments below.
