Gmail also has auto-complete feature in its search bar but it only used to prompt with addresses or titles of email.

The new auto-complete as announced by Gmail, will be made more relevant to the email you are viewing currently.

Lets say you are reading a email from a friend about a book he recently bought, then when you search the auto-complete will show up more options which are related to books rather than just contacts. This will be data used from your emails in the past itself.

The change seems rather small and will be hardly noticed by most users except that their email search will get a lot more intuitive.

Scanning Emails is not really Evil!

Earlier in the year, when Google announced a single Privacy Policy across various services, people seemed to be angry with the fact the Google would use data across services to show more ads. Also some experts complained that Google would be scanning their emails which were on Gmail, conveniently ignoring that most email services do the same with their spam filters.

This sort of auto-complete feature actually is a good example of how Google improves the email experience by crawling your emails.

This is a more visual change that shows more intelligently linked results. As seen in the image below, people using Google.com and using English, will see in depth information on certain search queries.

• The knowledge graph shows some basic information and most importantly links to what other people search for.
• This is a lot like related links but stuff people are actually searching for.

Is Google getting back to basics?

The search tool is a refreshing new feature thought up by Google. Google has brought out some interesting search tools like Google Realtime (which it has discontinued), Wonderwheel and Flight search. But lately it was obsessed with only social integration across all its web services. I personally have never found social search as particularly helpful.

Maybe with Google’s Knowledge Graph it is getting back to basics and concentrating on serving up more helpful search options and tools for users. That said it might make the search result page look cluttered.

Unfortunately not everyone is an expert with a camera and hence a lot of home videos end up being shaky with distortions.

YouTube itself has a nice tool to stabilize shaky videos automatically. Unfortunately these did not work as well with videos shot with a mobile phones. Mobile phone cameras have an electronic rolling camera shutter which ends up distorting the image especially if the camera is moved.

According to Google’s Research Blog, videos shot on mobile phones will be automatically compensated for rolling shutter distortions.

Use YouTube Editor to Stabilize your Videos

• Access your videos on YouTube Editor and select the video you want to stabilize.
• YouTube will automatically stabilize any shaky videos and also work wonders with videos shot with mobile phones.

Seeing how well YouTube stabilizes videos, it might be a good idea to upload all those shaky mobile home videos and stabilize them. In case you are uploading your personal videos it might be a good idea to not make them public and share them only via a URL.

The new cloud service is being rolled out for everyone with a Gmail account. Just visit the Google Drive landing page and check if it is ready for your account.

Google Drive Features

• Every new user will be allowed 5 GB free. That is a pretty large size for anyone with normal storage needs. Amazingly you can move up to 25 GB for $2.50 per month.
• The new service will work on Windows PC, Mac. It also has an Android app with iPad and iPhone apps expected in the future.
• Files from Google Drive can be shared with others with just a link. This is a feature what was only released on Dropbox very recently.
• Google is also bringing in OCR to Google Drive. This means if we scan a letter as an image, it could search for a particular keyword even from the scanned copy. The technology though is not very accurate at this stage.

Natural extension of Google Docs

I do think that Google will bring in more features than Dropbox does as Google Drive seems like a natural extension of Google Docs. So some of the features like collaborative work on a single document by many and seeing the changes in real-time will surely add muscle to the new product.

What remains to be seen if Google Drive is actually targeting Dropbox because I think they have their eyes trained more on Apple’s iCloud and Microsoft’s SkyDrive.

I am not one of those bloggers who likes to take a look at Google Analytics ten times a day. Just looking at the traffic trends once a day is more than enough. For less popular sites, I guess even once a week could be adequate.

Google Analytics now allows users to send reports to an email address everyday or even once every week.

Just sign into your Google Analytics account and look up the traffic stats. There you will see a link called ‘Email Beta’ as seen in the image below.

Click on the link and you will see an option select the type of file the information is supposed to be sent to you. It could be as an excel file or even a PDF.

Add in the email address of the person you want these reports to be sent out. You can select the frequency of email reports being sent out and also the time frame they are sent out. The time frame is by default set to 6 months.

This is ideal for website owners to share weekly traffic stats to potential advertisers.

This year was not any different and Google was hard at work pulling of many pranks.

#1. 8 Bit Google Maps

This year, Google lauched Quest styled 8-bit maps on Google Maps. The maps resemble how old video games displayed maps. If you have ever played video games more than a decade ago, chances are you have come across these 8-bit maps.

While you look up a map on Google Maps, press on the Quest button and the 8-bit map shows up. I am not sure if Google is pulling of a prank here, they are just doing something incredibly nerdy.

#2. Gmail Tap

Gmail Tap is supposed to replace all buttons on your mobile phone. Apparently Gmail claims, that all we require are two buttons. People will be able to use only the dot and dash buttons and write their messages on a mobile phone with morse code.

#3. Chrome Multitask

Chrome Multitask promises to take multitasking to ridiculous levels. It suggests users will be able to use two mouse pointers on the same screen for different tasks at the same time (see video below).

Visit Chrome Multitask home page and click on “Try Multitask Mode”. Then try to exit the mode. Your screen in a while will be flooded with several mouse pointers.

#4. Google Racing

This prank is an announcement by Google, that it is tying up with Nascar. Nascar will allow a car that drives automatically without a driver to race in the main competition. Though driverless cars taking part in a race might be over the top, Google is not joking about the driveless car part. It has an actual serious project that allows a car to drive itself from one place to another.

#5. Google Analytics Reports from other planets

This prank is literally out of this world. The idea is to allow new features to Google Analytics which will report how many people are visiting your website from different planets like Mars, Venus and more.

Google introduced this prank on its Analytics Blog.

Google has a long tradition of celebrating April Fools Day with different pranks on its various services.

But those rumors seem to be more relevant with screen-shots spilling out about the new service. The one below is from Talk Android.

The interesting part of this screenshot is that Google Drive will offer 5GB space free. Dropbox which Google Drive will compete against offers 2 GB free for every new sign up. The service is also supposed to go live in the second week of April 2012.

Why Google Needs to Get into Cloud Sync?

One might argue that Google is losing focus yet again with another new product. But I think Google absolutely needs a good service to synchronize and store data for users. With several million tablets and phones running on the Android platform, it would make it imperative for Google to offer their users a service to sync their data across different devices.

At the moment I am quite happy with Dropbox, but I wont shy away from trying out Google Drive when it goes live.

Today, Google has introduced a new service called account activity. This basically puts together a report on your Google account’s usage across its various services.

• Visit this link and verify your Google account. Even if you are signed into Gmail, it will still ask for verification as pre-cautionary measure.
• When you receive the link to the account activity report, go ahead and check out your report.
• I got some interesting information on how many emails I sent or received in a month or how many people viewed videos I had uploaded on YouTube.

I do not use Google Search when I am signed into my account, so I guess that is why it does not show search related details for the month. Otherwise it is supposed to show details regarding your search queries too.

It also gives a quick idea of which platforms and browsers were used to access your Google account. This can be handy to catch suspicious activity on your Google account.

• Just click on compose and start writing your email. A new option to add a label to that email appears. Users can also ‘star’ it along with assigning labels.
• Unfortunately I did not see this option with my Google Apps account but hopefully they will roll it out for App accounts soon.
• You might also want to check on Gmail Undo Send feature, which allows users to stop an email they might have sent by mistake.

Gmail over the last year did concentrate on some fancy changes like a new design and integrating it with Google+ circles. Many of these changes were cosmetic but  it seems that Gmail is now back to rolling out features which are more productive.

• Log in to your Google Webmaster Tools account. The first page will show up the list of websites that you own on webmaster tools.
• On the right hand corner of every website listed is a button named “Manage site”.
