Remember the simple trick of typing in this query ‘Do a Barrel Roll’ and the entire results page on Google turned upside down and back again. Well this Valentine’s Day, someone has figured out a way to enter a mathematical equation and get a graphical output which is heart shaped.

The Equation to Google’s Heart!

Just enter the following equation into Google Search and hit the search button.

sqrt(cos(x))*cos(300x)+sqrt(abs(x))-0.7)*(4-x*x)^0.01, sqrt(6-x^2), -sqrt(6-x^2) from -4.5 to 4.5

The equation is translated into a Graph which shows up in the shape of a heart. This feature is not a very well known feature of Google. You can check out more such Google search features here.

Google does have some weird Easter eggs, but this was probably not the doing of a Google programmer. If you play around the values in the equation, the output starts to change. So someone must have figured out a way to create this hear shaped design with the right values.

I have not used Google Earth for a long time since I go a new laptop for myself. But when I found out that Google has released a new version Google Earth 6.2, I was curious to check it out. Google Earth is a product that people probably use lesser now a days, as it is more practical to use Google maps.

But true map lovers will probably will enjoy Google Earth a lot more. I think will soon replace most traditional world atlas books anyways.

Google Earth 6.2 Features

The new version of Google Earth makes a big improvement from a visual point of view. Earlier we saw while the map was being rendered, a jigsaw of rectangular blocks show up. Now it is a lot more seamless and smoother.

Also there are many search improvements, along with auto-complete for Google Earth search. This will a big help for users and might attract more search queries using Google Earth.

Finally, the social push for Google Earth comes with the option of sharing screenshots from the software directly onto Google+. Users can also share screen shots via email.

Google Earth 6.0 introduced immersive 3D layout and that has been advanced with more detailing.

If you download the latest version of Google Earth you might want to check how to activate flight simulator on Google Earth. Google Earth also has Building maker for users to contribute 3D models of building to it.

Around the time Google introduced their social offering called Google+, they started an exercise of bring together all their products and services. They started with redesigning all their products to bring in visual uniformity. They also introduced Google+ integration in YouTube, Gmail, Google Reader and more.

Now it has brought about a convergence of 60 different privacy policy into a singe one. Well on the surface it looks a lot better for Google users, as a single privacy policy can actually be read and understood and not reading through several ones.

But it has also raised some questions on what happens to the data and how Google will deal with it.

You can check the old privacy policy here and compare it with the new single privacy policy.

What could be the advantages for Google?

Google will also integrate all the data, users have across all their products and services. This could be something that it already does through various privacy policies, but now will do it through a single one.

Users might not like the idea of their data being integrated from various other services, but it will probably give Google better way to serve up relative advertisements.

I think most people would be fine with this data being integrated, except with Gmail. People already do not like the idea of advertisements being served up on Gmail. If they see their data from Gmail being used to serve up advertisements on their search results, it might cause some criticisms of Google.

Here is a video explaining their single privacy policy

Some users were unhappy but it seems the changes have brought about some positives for YouTube.

According to Reuters, YouTube has reach the milestone of 4 Billion videos views per day. That is 25% up since data from May 2011. The number is truly mind-boggling, as it means that every hour 166 millions videos views take place. That does mean more than 46,000 videos views per second.

Other YouTube Statistics

10% of videos on YouTube are available in HD.

Over 48 hours of video are uploaded on YouTube every minute.

Mobiles users account for 400 million views on YouTube.

500 tweets on Twitter link to a video on YouTube every minute.

YouTube Monetization problems

Also 3 billion videos are monetized per week. That means less than 1/10th of the videos watched on YouTube are making money.

YouTube has been one of Google’s great successes but at the moment it is not making any real money for Google. But as bandwidth grows across the world, online streaming could possibly replace television over the next decade. This puts YouTube in a great place.

What are your views on the growth of YouTube? Do drop in your comments.

A few months ago when Google+ was introduced to the world, I managed to get an invite and within 24 hours I was a Google+ fan. I liked the layout, the options regarding privacy. I felt it has real potential as Google starts to integrate some of its popular products into its new social network. I was left with one lingering doubt about Google+. What was it doing that Facebook did not do?

The answer to that question has been answered in the form of Search+. This is a new option for people searching on Google, to be able to get more personalized results.

You will be able to see options to toggle between personal and normal search results on Google with a single click. This change will be rolled out for everyone over the next couple of days.

Google+ will be heavily leveraged as posts and photos will show up along with related pages, profiles and probably latest updates on that topic by Google+ connections.

Google+ has been promoted by integrating it on Gmail and Google Reader. But the big fish for Google has always been search and now with its integration into Google+ might just give Google’s social network a big booster shot it needs.

Here is a video of the new feature rolled out on Google Search:

If I search for a friend on Google, usually I do get results for LinkedIn profile or a Twitter account and even Facebook. All that might change in the future with Google+ being pushed forward a lot more in Google results. This might be a great idea of Google but it might cause some headaches to Twitter and LinkedIn.

Google has aggressively promoted its browser Chrome, across television, print and internet media. A recent look at the search query “this post is sponsored by Google Chrome” gives thousands of results.

This lead to questions about the practice of Google Chrome was buying links from bloggers to promote the landing page to download Chrome with a link. This practice is discouraged by Google itself.

Ideally the paid link should have had the NoFollow tag that indicates to Google it was a paid link.

Matt Cutts the head of Google web spam team, put out a post explaining the action Google would be taking. In a quote, Cutts explains the action that Google Web Spam team will take against paid links by Google Chrome.

In response, the webspam team has taken manual action to demote www.google.com/chrome for at least 60 days..

If you now search for the query ‘Browser’ or ‘Chrome’ the landing page for Chrome does not show up in the first few results at all. I decided to check the best query for the landing page to show up first which was ‘Download Google Chrome’.

Yes, even if Google has demoted a link to their landing page, they have promoted with an sponsored link.

Will it have an impact on Chrome?

No. Chrome is already a very popular browser and it might have a small impact on the number of downloads. Anyways if the download link still shows up as a sponsored link so that might not really impact its downloads.

This will probably add to the confusion over how and when one should use nofollow tags on links.

On the other hand, I am glad to see Google own up to its mistake and be transparent about what has happened instead for trying to cover up (which usually end up in further embarrassments).

What are your views on Google Chrome’s landing page getting demoted? Do drop in your comments.

Almost anyone who watches online videos, does spend a lot of time on YouTube. Google has redesigned YouTube recently, which encourages viewers to share videos socially and view videos watched recommended by their friends.

YouTube has launched a new addictive game, called YouTube Slam. This pits one video against another and lets the user choose.

For regular YouTube users, this could be a great way to discover new videos. Two random videos are pitted against each other and we have to select one of them. The videos are categories under Comedy, Cute, Music, Bizarre and Dance. The videos that win most often get highlighted on a leaderboard.

YouTube’s Viral Tool

Such a game, where videos are pitted against each other can be very addictive and the preferred way for some to pass time. Searching videos to watch something funny can be a boring job, so such small features will help YouTube users discover videos randomly. It could also be a launch pad for some videos to go viral.

Try out YouTube Slam for yourself and drop in your comments.

Google auto-complete suggestions for search are probably based on what people search for most. But what people search for most changes according to geographic locations. There is also the average age of the internet user which keeps changing from country to country.

For example most people in the US, who use the internet or Google to search for stuff online are probably older than say Indians, where a lot of users are very young and in college.

We decided to check out how auto-suggestions change from US and India for the same query on Google.

The first image is from Google.com (US) and the next one is from Google.co.in (India).

The difference is a lot between the two countries. Google auto-complete suggestions do give interesting results. If you liked this post, you might enjoy these two posts which are based on similar ideas of auto-suggestions.

Among the most searched queries, Facebook is at the top ahead of YouTube, Gmail and Yahoo. There are also many people who search for the word ‘Google’ on Google.

List of the 10 top fastest rising and most searched queries are as follows:

Indian Search Trends

Amongst the top 10 fastest rising search queries, three are about movies, one about a celebrity. Two queries are related to sports.

Facebook and Google+ also are in the list. This means a lot of internet users in India are searching for information related entertainment, sports and social media.

Amongst the most search query, it is surprising why so many people search for Facebook, Gmail, YouTube and other websites on Google search.

I wonder if that is because people are using Google as an address bar or if more of them are using Chrome and end up searching by name the website they want to reach from the address bar itself.

Interestingly in both lists, nothing that relates to online shopping shows up except in the case of Indian Railways, where people are searching for ways to book tickets online.

The search trends do show that a lot of people who use Google are young, urban Indians who might not be more inclined to search for sports and entertainment and not news and current events.

What are your views? What do you think you searched for most on Google this year? Do drop in your comments.
