Needless to say, these were automated messages from my friends as they don’t know Portuguese. Bom Sabado means Good Saturday in Portuguese.

If you open your scrapbook, same scrap will be sent to all your friends from your account.

So stay away from Orkut till further notice (or use m.orkut.com till then)

Update – Do not open Orkut as per this official forum thread.

Workaround - Below is a workaround posted by Arikarin. Use at your own risk. I didn’t try it.

A way to get rid of this and even to change your pass if you want to is:

1. Clear your cookies/cache, then you may get an ‘Automated Query’ message. Don’t hustle about it.
2. Just logout from your account, if you don’t know about the logout link. Here it is : http://www.orkut.co.in/GLogin?cmd=logout
3. After that just go to settings page or if not, better to do anything is to switch on to the ‘OLDER VERSION’ of Orkut and try re-setting your password.

You can use older version of Orkut or simply mobile version at m.orkut.com! I used m.orkut.com only!

Sharing images is very vital for any social network and sharing them easily across the board is more important. We already use Twitter and Facebook without visiting their websites but actually doing so through their APIs on various websites. This is pretty much the same with photos which also you do not want to really share from just one platform.

Orkut also now allows sharing images through Scraps. These new and interesting features are being shown off by Orkut with a video on its blog.

The video also explains how you can not just upload albums but also share them with selected friends and also with email address of people without an Orkut account.

Google has released an application for Orkut named as People hopper which will let you morph any of your friend face into other friend face and you can see the cycle of changes.

You can add this application by clicking on this link. Though  other orkut user reported that this application is not working into their account but it seems to be working fine for my Orkut profile. Note : I tested this on Google powered chrome browser.

This is one of the best feature provided by the Facebook. Orkut has started it before, but it was not that much effective. But now, the status works similar in facebook and on Orkut. Here is the system in Orkut :

The chat application that is shown in the bottom right corner of Facebook / orkut also shows similarities.

3.Commenting System:

This was one of the greatest features that Facebook had. As a part of the beta version of new orkut, orkut has tested this system too in it. Here is the shot of commenting system in Orkut;

4.Friends suggestion tool :

This is another tool that became popular in facebook. Even-though there is a difference in appearance, this too does the same job.

5.Friends box :

An avatar of your friends (in a random order) on your sidebar – Under a tab named ‘friends’ or ‘my friends’. That is the common option that prevailed in both these sites from the starting itself. We can count it as one of the best similarities between these two sites.

Today when i was browsing through my friends profiles, i stunned to see the pic of one of my friend and his blog on the ad-section of my page. I thought that he had started to use adwords. But it was then i realized  the cool ‘promote it’ button in it. It was an ‘Promotion’ created by him.

This service named promotion is just another form of self advertising. You can create your own ad, that will be shown in the left sidebar of your friends orkut page.

What is Orkut Promote ?

• You can share information like text, pictures or youtube Videos with your friends
• If they like it, they can re share it by clicking the ‘promote it’ button [just like digg and reddit]
• You can track the promotions you got, how many users have seen it, and how many have deleted it from the my promotions tab.

It’s Great, How can i create one for me ?

It’s pretty simple. You may see a link for it in your sidebar. If you don’t, then just add a ‘#Promote’ with the URL of your orkut page. It must look like http://www.orkut.co.in/Main#Promote

• Add a title and a comment for your Ad
• Select which type of promotion you need – Text, Image or Video
• Type in the text you want to show, or select the Image or youtube Video from your profile
• Click on ‘create promotion’
• It’s done.Now track it’s status under ‘my promotions’ Tab.

How different will be the new look?

New look home page for Orkut

• One thing that stands out immediately is your profile pic inside a blue box (color can be changed to green, orange, pink and black). The predominant thing about it is the ‘What are you upto?’ text box. It seems Orkut has realized people like to write more about themselves and what they are doing rather than write scraps to others.
• There is the added functionality to add applications (another Facebook like feature). But accessing the application is neatly tucked in under a ‘Add’ button on the main page.
• The main difference seems to be all a higher priority to updates rather than scraps. The format seems to be designed around it.

I was quite impressed with this new design even though some may complain it has taken a lot from Facebook. But I think they have got the balance right. It still has the Orkut feel to it and hence I doubt it will have much negative reaction.
