For Firefox Users

Firefox users can make use of Mozilla Prism, though it’s still in Mozilla labs, it’s pretty stable.

• First, get Mozilla Prism add-on for Firefox, or else you can choose to download the desktop version of it.
• After downloading, launch the Prism app (if you’re using the add-on, hit Tools > Convert website into application, in Firefox) enter the URL of the site you want to turn into a web app and fill other credentials.
• If the app doesn’t catch the favicon, you can upload a local image, too. If you’re on Windows 7, you can pin the created desktop shortcut onto your taskbar.

If you created desktop version of say, Gmail, then it also notifies you when you get a new email, it stays in the tray.

For Chrome Users

You don’t need any add-on for converting websites into desktop apps, in Chrome. It’s already built in.

All you need to do is, click on the wrench icon > Tools > Create application shortcuts, and you’re done.

Many of you have knew this already, but if you’ve overlooked this, then do try it now.

Along with Yahoo Messenger, AIM was also very popular for instant message. Today both these services are losing out big time. In order to make a comeback, AOL announced that AIM is no more orthodox, and released its new IM client, the AIM Preview.

Features of AIM Preview

• Chat with your Gtalk, Facebook and AIM buddies all at one place.
• Group chat with your friends, share photos and videos, along with one-to-one video chat.
• Get Facebook, Gmail, Instagram and Twitter notifications right inside AIM, instantly.
• If you’re using AIM for iPhone, then it syncs the message history with the desktop version.

I have a bad experience with Facebook Chat and if you have similar issues then AIM is your best bet. It’s not the only IM client, as you have great alternatives like Digsby, Pidgin and all, but it’s hard to disagree that AIM has improved.

• Instant Elevator Music (IEM) basically detects progress bars, application lags and starts playing music, so you no longer need to frown.
• Currently IEM supports everywhere there’s a progress bar, along with that apps like DownThemAll, Teracopy etc. are also supported. It comes preloaded with a music file, you can add your own music to it, supports pretty much all the popular music formats.
• You can tell IEM to not play music when there’s a song playing already, for that, check the music tab in settings. There’s also a ignore list, where you can add programs, so IEM won’t play music when they’re lagging or if they have progress bars.

As you guessed, it’s portable (just copy the program folder to your USB and you’re good to go) and stays in the system tray to work. You can put it to startup from the settings menu. IEM does one thing and does it perfectly, that’s what I like in it.

When you boot your Windows 8 device, you’ll be shown a set of tiles which show the apps you’ve installed, it’s highly customizable.  Mosaic is a Windows 7 only app for all those Windows fans who can’t wait to get their hands on Live Tiles feature.

Previewing Live Tiles using Mosaic

• Mosaic promises to give Live Tiles experience on your Windows 7 device, it’s opensource.
• You can add new apps to Mosaic from its store, there are many good apps like Gmail, Twitter, Google Calendar etc.

• You can also add .exe files of the most used application to Mosaic Screen. To do that, hit on the forward button > Pin > Application, and select the executable file.
• The wallpaper of Mosaic screen can be customizable too, for that, hit options > UI > select any image.
• It also integrates with Facebook, you can favorite any of your Facebook friends and they will show up as Tiles, you can even access the wall.

• Also, you can pin your favorite websites as tiles, it does have an integrated browser for that.
