We had submitted our blog to Alltop.com under the Tech category quite some time ago. Last week we got confirmation that our Alltop submission was accepted.

If you visit tech.alltop.com and see the last blog featured or right-hand corner at the end of the page. It is our very own Devils’ Workshop.

You might have noticed a major downtime today for Devils Workshop as well as other blogs in rtBlogs network.

We were pushing a major update where we merged all blogs in rtBlogs WordPress multisite inside rtCamp’s WordPress multisite. The goal was to centralize our user’s login info so that they can easily contribute to our blog network, as well as use support forums at rtCamp’s product portals easily.

In the long run, you will be using a single account to:

• Contribute on Devils Workshop, Cric Talks, Cult Affairs and future blogs that will get added in rtBlogs Network
• Post on Devils Workshop’s technical support forum (coming soon)
• Use free support forum for rtCamp’s product sites like Blogger To WordPress Migration, BuddyPress-Media Component, WordPress-Nginx Setup, rtPanel WordPress Theme Framework & more
• Use affiliate program at Blogger To WordPress Migration service to make some money
• A totally new web-app is on the way! More details later….

Our current move many have some side-effects. So please check few things:

• If you are using our Google AdSense Revenue Sharing program, please check your posts to see if they are displaying your ads.
• Also check if your posts are attributed to you only
• If you are not able to log in, try resetting your password with email-address you used at the time of registration.
• If you see your user-name changes, please do not panic. We are expecting few usernames to be changed as we merged two user-bases.

While today’s changes will most likely go unnoticed for a while, we hope to surprise you with our next round of changes. The good thing about next round is, there will be no downtime!

-- This Post Important – Major Changes to rtBlogs Network is Published on Devils Workshop .

The goal behind creating those topic-specific blogs was to provide comprehensive information source to readers following some of hottest topics out there. Unfortunately, we couldn’t meet our goal. In fact, with so many blogs in our network, we ended up spending more time in managing them leaving us less time for writing. So after more than a months brainstorming we decided to “undo” our mistake.

Today we have merged 3 blogs in our network, that are OrkutDiary, FbKnol, WpVeda back into our top blog Devils Workshop.

Why we decided to merge them….

OrkutDiary was merged few days back for obvious reason – we ourselves stopped using Orkut since long so it wasn’t updated for quite some time. Writing about stuff we don’t use personally was never our style!

FbKnol was merged as personal interest started to drop in it. Though FbKnol stats were quite impressive, its future didn’t look promising enough to invest more into it. (off-topic: personal interest is shifting to Google+)

WpVeda‘s merger is hard to justify. We have no plan to quit WordPress platform for blogging (and business also). WpVeda was just turning out to be a misfit in our overall strategic plans.

As you can see for each of above blog we had a reason to merge it back into Devils Workshop. After this merger, rtBlogs network now has one dedicated blog for all technology related stuff i.e. Devils Workshop.

What does this mean for Subscribers?

If you have subscribed to any of above blog via email newsletter, RSS feed, twitter and/or Facebook fan-page; you will continue to get updates without  any interruption.

If you are already a subscriber at Devils Workshop, then you can unsubscribe from old blog(s) as content related to them will be served on Devils Workshop again.

What does this mean for Contributors?

If you love writing about Facebook, WordPress or even Orkut, you now have a much bigger and better platform to write. Yup, you can now post all technical stuff on Devils Workshop without bothering about niche!

I hope this will make some of our contributors happy who were not comfortable posting on small topic-specific blogs.

Summary…

Going by records, efforts we put into creating 3 blogs, their logos, themes, branding, etc are all go in vain now. But I have a gut feeling that this will prove a right decision going ahead.

For rtCamp, rtBlogs was never a prime source of revenue. So, we never bothered about this decision’s impact on search-engine rankings, traffic, revenue and other factors across rtBlogs Network.

Following line can sum up this event in better way…

I may be walking slowly but I never walk backwards… whenever I walk backwards it’s for a long jump!

We launched CultAffair on our network on 25th December 2010.

CultAffair is a blog that will cover the street. Often in our everyday life, we find many ordinary things on the roads and streets corners. There is a hidden world which we often ignore simply because we do not have the time to stop and look. CultAffair will try to do that and bring to you through its posts that “Ordinary is not Boring”.

This blog is the brainchild of Shradha Rao and you might be familiar with her posts on DW if you are a regular here.

Well it is not really that complicated and a while ago I created a rough video on how to explain the idea of guest blogging inside a minute. This is my first attempt at animation and I did not use any animation software either. Hopefully I will get better at this and make more interesting videos in the future.

Yes Blogger of the Month will be back very very soon!

Earlier we had simple statistics to decide on who wins Blogger of the Month contest for that month. We also then allowed it across all our rtBlogs network.

We thought now that we are coming out with Blogger of the Month version 2.0 it would be a great idea to take opinions and suggestions from our readers on what they would like to see with this contest and how to make it bigger.

Some points for you to consider:

• Should there be one prize or many prizes? For many months we had a $100 dollar prize but then later we did have a prize for the top three ranked authors.
• Do you want the Blogger of the Month award on per blog or across blog network. Our blog network called rtBlogs has Devils’ Workshop, wpVeda, Fbknol, Orkut Diary and CricTalks. Do you want the author to be ranked number one across the blog networked as No. 1 or on particular blog?
• How do you want the rating system. Earlier we had a every post rated on English and Presentation along with the context of the post. This was important as news like post got lesser weight overall. Do you have any better ideas?
• Earlier if you wrote the scored for all the posts written were added and that was the score on which authors were ranked. Do you have any alternative ideas?

The point of this post is we want ideas and a discussion around what you would want to see with Blogger of the Month version 2.0.  So start dropping in your comments with your ideas and we will try to incorporate all of them.

We will be upgrading our servers for things listed below tonight (after 1 hour).

We are expecting downtime from 30 minutes to 1 hour. As we have so many things to upgrade/improve, downtime is unavoidable.

All guest bloggers requested to save their posts/work before 3AM if they are planning to write tonight.

Things we will be doing!

• Upgrade Ubuntu 9 to Ubuntu 10 (LTS)
• Upgrade WordPress MU 2.9.2 to WordPress 3.0
• Turn on nginx fastcgi_cache
• Migrate from php-fastcgi to php-fpm
• Say bye-bye to Wp-Super-Cache and use w3TotalCache with nginx
• Enable CDN on other blogs
• Remove domain-mapping plugin (we don’t need it anymore for domain mapping to work, in our case at least! See this post)
• Enable APC and memcache and configure w3Total Cache to use these high-performance extensions (will post about this later on wpveda)
