All computer students and programming geeks might like to look up CodeChef and maybe even take part in a competition they have for programmers.
CodeChef hosts competitions for programmers with cash prizes for people residing in India and the US. Currently they have two upcoming contests the CodeChef Campus SnackDown on November 21st and another one called CodeChef December Challenge which is from Dec 1st to Dec 11th. Registration for SnackDown contest is already over but you can still look up the contest at the CodeChef website.

CodeChef December 2009 Challenge

• First prize winner for winner from India is Rs 22,000/- and for the US is $440/-.
• CodeChef’s December challenge will consist of 6-8 problems of varying difficulty.
• The contest website has problems visible on the website on 1st December, 15.00 IST.

• If you solve the problem you get one point regardless of the level of difficulty.
• You can submit your solutions as many times as you would like as there are no penalties for incorrect submissions.

About CodeChef

Code Chef is a competition started by Directi as a way to engage the developer community and give them a forum. CodeChef hosts monthly online competitions for programmers in 35 programming languages. With over 50 speakers and many more wordpress experts in attendance, I would surely love to be there, just enriching myself with ideas they will be sharing. But the fact is, there is no way I can arrange for the resources for being part of WordCamp in New York. Even our developers at rtCamp were doing a bit of day dreaming about hoping onto the next flight to New York.

Then I came across this post on weblogtoolscollection which mentioned in a very tongue in cheek manner the website with name - I wish I was at Word Camp

I Wish I was at Word Camp is a amazing website to keep in touch with what is happening at Word Camp New York. It comes with the tag line ‘Couldn’t cough up the money, huh?’ which shows a humorous side to the fact that even if you are in New York and not 10,000 miles away, the entry fee for a Sunday afternoon is $25 and if you want to attend the whole weekend and share your knowledge on WordPress it can go up to as high as $500.

I wish I was at Word Camp is quite handy when it comes to real time monitoring of events through various feeds on their homepage. It has design like PopUrls (read review) and purpose to.

From one page you can check twitter accounts of few top WordPress developers as well as can keep an eye on WordCamp NYC 2009′s twitter hashtag – #wcnyc

The website also includes pictures of participants posted through Flickr.

It seems like the folks at Word Camp are already started to enjoy!

The event was better than expected and around 100 bloggers were gathered despite NO free T-shirt or lunch this time. Glad to see people are seriously camping for the sake of discussion only!

We could not attend entire event but for the first time I presented a talk at any *camp event (expect rtCamp event).

The talk was about one of the hottest post on Devils Workshop – “Migrating from Blogger to WordPress without loosing permalinks,  traffic & SEO“. As topic was a bit techie, less number of people turned up for this but we had quality and lengthy discussion at the end.

Those who missed it, can find that presentation on slideshare.

I was also glad to see Prateek Dixit (DW Profile), one of DW’s guest blogger there. Unfortunately, I could not catch up with him. Sorry Prateek. It would have been great experience interacting with you.

It was great meeting new bloggers {Krishnan, Nikhil, Anant and few more} out out there.

WordCamp

WordCamp is unconference centered around WordPress community. Among all camps, WordCamp is most frequent and organized event. You can always have a look at upcoming WordCamps on this central site. They have WordCamp scheduled till October 2009 already!

This time, India is having its first WordCamp on 21st and 22nd Feb in New Delhi. Key attraction of this event is presence of Matt Mullenwag, founder and lead developer of WordPress itself.

Apart from Matt himself, other celebrities which will be speaking at this event includes Amit Agarwal (from Digital Inspiration), Pavan Duggal (Advocate, Supreme court of India).

MozillaCamp

Arun Ranganathan and Seth Bindernagel form Mozilla team are already travelling across India, meeting and collaborating with Mozilla community.

Mozilla Camp has already started and we missed them in Delhi  on 10th Feb. Below is schedule of remaining tour. (source: Mozilla blog)

• Feb. 12th – 13th, Kanpur:  The duo will be participating in the inaugural FOSSKriti at Techkriti.  Arun will be leading a workshop on Web development & Open Source technologies on the night of the 12th and then a HTML5 talk on Feb. 13th.
• Feb. 14th – 15th, Pune:  Arun and Seth find themselves at GNUnify where they will be leading a mini Mozilla Camp covering localization, Web tools and more.  On Sunday morning from 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. they will be joining PuneTech.com for an open meet up.

Even though they are visiting Pune, I won’t be able to attend this event personally. But if you can catch up with them, do not miss it!

Yahoo’s Open Hack Day India

As its name suggest, this event is more centered around Yahoo technologies like BOSS, Blueprint, YAP, YQL and more. Still level of skills and demos it carries is really awesome. This is invitation only event and as far as I know, list of attendees has been finalized.

Still if you are in Bangalore and have some really good friend in Yahoo and/or among event organizers, you can take a chance!

Well, I guess by now this feature must be available in everyone’s profile (as my profile gets all new feature at last). But what is it all about?  I tried doing some research using this new feature, and I am going to say you all what I could do out of this thing..

Though I did not find this feature much useful, still I gave it a try. Immediately after hitting the ‘events’ button on the left sidebar of my homepage, I got a form to fill and I did so by entering one of my friend’s birth day and also invited some of my friends too, to attend the event. Guess all the invitees have got an invitation and have an option either to accept, reject or choose the option ‘may be attending’ for the invitation sent to them.

Well many things done and said, but it matter not how much features Orkut introduces, but what matters is how useful are those feature..? You too give it a try and let us know, personally how useful did you find this feature.

As usual, for all early morning events, I reached late and missed my free T-shirt. Actual reason was huge response to the event. Organizer printed 300 T-shirts but around 600 geeks turned up for the event! More than 1200 guys registered for it. In fact, it was so overcrowded that venue sponsor Persistent denied access to the lift and asked people to use the staircase to the 7th floor! Smarty me, didn’t do that. I used lift between 1st and 6th Floor.

Now something really important…

There were lots of talks on Drupal and Joomla, two popular CMSes. Those who use them or work on them must have been greatly benefited.

Apart from this another hot topic was OpenSocial. Out of all talks on OpenSocial, I liked one given by Pravin Nirmal. He presented his topic very nicely with live demo of an Orkut App. He also cleared lots of my doubts regarding OpenSocial and Orkut Apps. You can expect my first Orkut App within a month. If you have any nice idea for an Orkut app, please share it with us.

I spent most of my time with Ankur Gattani, young entrepreneur behind LifeinLines. If you missed my earlier review about LifeinLines, its here. It was nice to know his plans for LifeinLines and if you are using it, expect a lot of cool features in coming days.

Apart from it, I was privileged to meet Sebastiaan Deckers, a member of XMPP (Jabber) Foundation and developer of Pandion chat client. Those who don’t know, famous Google Talk uses XMPP protocol for communications.

And lastly…

It was really surprising to see that there was no single talk on WordPress and Facebook – two most-famous PHP apps!

Another bad thing was no wi-fi for campers. Again sponsor turned off wi-fi connectivity on campus. Sorry Rupesh, this is the reason, I couldn’t blog about event while it was going on.

Apart from this, overall event was great, thanks to organizers, who really worked hard to make it successful.

Finally thanks to my friend Anil’s younger bro Santosh, I got a cool T-shirt from Directi. It has PHP logo on it with PHP defined as – “Pretty Hot Programmer”.
