Round up of Apple’s Fall Event: New iPads, Macs and Free OS X Mavericks

Apple’s Fall event is usually when the company announces the good stuff before the major holiday season (AKA shopping season) kicks off. Apple had already unveiled the iPhone 5c and iPhone 5s over a month ago but the new iteration to the iPad, iPad Mini and MacBook Pro was eagerly awaited. Apple came out firing on all cylinders and here is a round-up of all devices announced at the Apple event.

iPad Air

What was the new iPad going to be called. Apple has had some mixed up naming convention, like after iPad 2 came the New iPad which was technically iPad 3. The new name suits it well and its called iPad Air (obviously borrowed from MacBook Air).

iPad Air

  • This tablet is light as in it weighs only 1 pound (0.45 kgs).
  • The display screen is 9.7 inch and support resolution of 2048 x 1536 and over 3.1 million pixels. It is with retina display.
  • It will run on the A7 chip and support 64-bit architecture, which will be a first for iPad.
  • iPad Air camera will take 5 MP photos with 1080p HD video recording and the front facing camera takes 1.2 MP photos with 720p HD video.
  • It will be available in space grey and silver. The device will also be available in WIFI only and WIFI+Mobile versions.

Pricing

The iPad Air Wifi with 16 GB storage is available for $499. The price of the iPad Air Wifi + Cellular with 16 GB storage is available for $629.

iPad Mini with retina display

iPad Mini with retina display has been hotly debated. With Google unveiling a powerful Nexus 7 (2013) earlier in the year, it was no surprise to see iPad Mini get the retina display tag. iPad Mini with retina display will be released in November.

iPad Mini RD

  • The iPad Mini with retina display packs the 7.9 inch display screen while supporting 2048 x 1536 resolution.
  • It will run on the A7 chip supporting 64-bit architecture.
  • iPad Mini camera will take 5 MP photos with 1080p HD video recording and the front facing camera takes 1.2 MP photos with 720p HD video.
  • The device will be available in grey, silver, white and black colours.

Pricing

The iPad Mini with retina display like the iPad Air will ship in two varieties. The iPad Mini Wifi with 16 GB storage will cost $399 and the Wifi + Cellular with 16 GB storage is priced at $529.

What happens to the older version of iPad and iPad Mini?

The older iPad Mini will still be around and sold at $299. The older iPad 2 will be sold at $399. Both prices are for devices with 16GB memory. This is a good idea by Apple as it gives it basically 4 tablet devices out there in the market.

MacBook Pro

The MacBook Pro lineup has also been refreshed. The new 13-inch and 15-inch display screen MacBook Pro laptops will ship with retina display. The 15-inch MacBook Pro without retina display has been discontinued. The device will ship with the newly released Mavericks OS X.

MBP - retina - 2013

  • The MacBook Pro laptops will run on Intel Haswell chips. The 13-inch device will pack a 2.4 GHz dual-core Intel Core i5 processor. The device will ship with 128 GB, 256 GB and 512 GB storage variants.
  • Similarly the 15-inch MacBook Pro will run on  2.0GHz quad-core Intel Core i7 processor for the 256 GB storage variant and 2.3 GHz quad-core Intel Core i7 processor for the 512 GB version.
  • MacBook Pro laptops will contain 2 USB 3.0 ports, HDMI port. The battery for the 13-inch MBP will last for 9 hours and 8 hours for the 15-inch MBP.

Pricing

The pricing of the 13-inch MBP with 128 GB storage is $1299 and for the 15-inch MBP for 256 GB storage is $1999. The MacBook Pro laptops should be available right away.

OS X Mavericks released and for free!

Apple’s big announcement was the release date for OS X Mavericks. The new OS X version is already available for Mac users. Most importantly Apple is releasing this update free of cost. That means every user will probably save $20 that it took to buy the new update.

Read the full article by Vibin on OS X Mavericks being free and some issues with the update.

The free upgrade this time around means that most future upgrades will also be given away free. That is a big challenge for companies like Microsoft who depend on selling new OS updates as a business.

Official Google Maps App for iPad Released

Google Maps had last year, much to the delight of iPhone users, released an official app for the phone. Apple had chucked Google Maps for their own Maps service which was less than satisfactory and ended up getting criticized. The criticism even had Apple’s CEO Tim Cook apologize for it. That is old news. Google has moved ahead with a new user-interface for its Maps on Android and has now rolled out the same of iOS users. The big news here is finally it has also released an official iPad version.

I checked out the app on my iPad and came away impressed. The android version on my phone is great for navigation and reviewing places but the iPad version pretty much matches feature to feature. The bigger screen also is much better for navigation purposes.

Features of Google Maps app on iPad

The search option to find locations and routes displayed are clean and without any information overload. While on the phone version it requires moving down to check alternate routes, because of the bigger screen on iPad, the several options can be viewed at the same time.

The turn-by turn navigation UI is also a lot better with options to view toggle to satellite view. About a year ago, I was not very happy with the navigation mode for Google Maps and found it was not as accurate in India. But it has become extremely accurate over the past few months, especially in cities.

Finally one of my favorite features on Google Maps in the new UI, is the ease with which users can review places they visit. Simply click on any of the places you find on Google Maps and it allows users to review the place. I think this is Google’s way of leveraging its Google+ layer on Google Maps.

I think it was about time for Google to release its Maps app officially for iPad. The browser version would work fine but it was tedious. Overall, I think in the maps business, with the acquisition of Waze, Google has more or less taken a unbeatable lead atleast for the foreseeable future.

‘Google Now’ is available on iPhone and iPad

Until today, Google Now was only available one Android but today it goes live on iOS. If you are using Google Search app on your iPhone or iPad, you only have to update the app. The Google Now feature will be updated onto your Google Search app.

Google Now basically taps into your data from various services like Gmail, Google Maps, Google+, Google Places, your search history and more. This information is then used to serve you with useful reminders and prompts. You might need change your privacy settings to allow your iPhone or iPad to let the Google app access your location data.

Google Now iOS

This is indicative that Google Now might soon be coming to our desktops thanks to it being integrated with Chrome or even Google’s homepage. We might see more such updates from Google in the run-up to its annual Google I/O conference.

If you have an iPhone or a iPad try out Google Now on it and drop in your comments.

Websites where you can buy iPad mini in India

After iPhone 5, Apple launched its latest tablet in India i.e. iPad Mini and iPad 4 a couple of days back. As expected; the product is out of stock but some websites still have them. Let’s have a look at the websites where you can get your iPad Mini in India and the best price for it. The official price for this tablet is 21,900 INR and you have to pay at least this amount to buy one. You can try coupon codes if you have them but Great Online Shopping Festival coupons are not applicable here.

ipad mini buy india online

Websites, Price and Delivery Time:

Flipkart: Its one of the most popular e-commerce website of India. The price tag is same 21,900 but unfortunately this device is currently out of stock for the 16GB model in both the colors. You can go for a 32GB model which is in stock and will be delivered in 2-4 days.

Homeshop18: Search on Google about the online price of iPad mini in India and most of the websites will say that Homeshop18 is giving it for 19,400 INR, well that’s not true, the price is same on this website as well and the product is currently out of stock. Once it’s available, the website will take 5-6 days to deliver it to you. So it will be better if you order it from Flipkart.

Snapdeal: Same official price, but it’s out of stock on this website.

MirchiMart: Product is in stock here and the expected delivery time is 2-4 days. You can also use their EMI option (check the website for more details). This website is not very popular as compared to other Indian e-commerce website. May be that’s the reason why iPad Mini is available but since I have never ordered something from this website so I can’t tell you about the site. If you have ordered something then don’t forget to share your views with us. Price is same 21,900 for the basic model.

Saholic: In stock and the product will be delivered next day for Delhi and will take a couple of days for Mumbai. You can check the delivery time for other cities on their website. EMI option is also available here. Same price tag.

Tradus: In stock, 3-5 days delivery time and it’s a popular website but still I won’t recommend it to you because of the price. You have to pay 25,999 for the basic model, so it’s better to buy a 32GB version from Flipkart than this 16GB model.

Please share your views about these websites or if you have already ordered an iPad online. Drop a comment below for any doubt. :)

Pinterest Releases App for Android

Pinterest: Best ever online promotional tool for your businessIf a social media website is looking at growth, then their future is on mobile phones. So it was inevitable that Pinterest, which is the newest entrant in the social media sphere has released an app for Android phones (check the link at the end of the article to download).

Pinterest has also released new apps for iPhone and iPad users.

Pinterest for Android!

The app allows users explore, follow and share pins based on different interests. It supports liking and commenting on favourite pins.

An important feature of the mobile phone app, is that it allows users to users to instantly pin an image taken from the phone’s camera. This means Pinterest is allowing users to create content on Pinterest, rather than source it from different websites, which is a very important for mobile devices.

The Unique Pinterest

Even though, I have personally not found Pinterest very interesting, but it is considered to be among the top 10 social media websites in the world. That is a great achievement especially in a overcrowded social media market.

I am guessing it is a great resource for hobby groups, especially as it allows people to follow and share interesting boards.

Another interesting part of Pinterest, is that 72% of its visitors are female.

If you are using Pinterest, try out their mobile app and drop in your comments and views.

Are Apple iPad Sales Completely Defying Logic?

Yesterday, Apple’s March quarterly earnings reports were released. Apple’s declared strong sale numbers for iPhone and iPads. iPads are an interesting niche for Apple as it is selling tablets in numbers no one could have even dreamed about, let alone predict.

Apple had revenues of $39.2 billion while their net profit was $11.6 billion. Note these are earnings from Janurary to March 2012 and after the usual shopping season.

Apple sold an incredible 12 million iPads from January to March 2012. That number grew at the rate of 151% when compared to the same quarter from last year.

Now what is more surprising is that ‘New iPad’ or iPad3 was expected in March and people were waiting for the new version to come out before buying it.

The ‘new iPad’ was actually announced on 7th March, so for two months people were buying iPad 2 in record numbers even though they knew a new version was around the corner.

What makes iPad so special?

Apple as a company is a fantastic brand and all their products are pretty iconic. But iPad is a special case as the term seems to be used to refer to tablets, a lot like how Google is synonymous with search engines. Even the very popular iPhone never has had this sort of cult status.

Apple will probably keep selling more iPads than every for a long time to come unless Windows 8 gets things dramatically right. What are your views on Apple’s incredible sale numbers? Do drop in your comments.

Indian Hockey Team Love Apple iPads More Than Cash!

Apple has its legions of fanboys who seem to love a gadgets, only if it has a Apple logo on it. It seems that the entire Indian Hockey team are diehard Apple fanboys. The hockey players have actually demanded iPads instead of cash prizes.

According to a report in The Hindu, the Hockey India has announced a plan to gift each player a cash prize of INR 1,00,0000 were told by the player they would prefer less cash and an Apple iPad instead. This prize was being given because the team qualified to play in the London Olympics to be held later this year. Hockey India is now making sure to give the players both the cash prize and the additional iPad.

Why iPad?

The primary reason behind the hockey players insisting on iPads and not other tablets, might be because their coach is a die-hard Apple fan. It also shows a growing influence of iPad as a brand in the tablet niche. It seems that iPad is becoming synonymous with tablet computers, just like Google has become for search engines.

Professional sports teams all over the world are often seen with their laptops looking up analysis. I guess in the post-PC world, these laptops will make way for tablets and even here iPad seems to be leading the pack.

Apple iPad 3; worth waiting or not?

Apple’s latest tablet in the iPad series that is iPad 3 is on its way and will be launched in the first quarter of 2012. As expected the internet and tech blogs are flooded with thousands of rumor related to iPad. Most of them are just gonna be rumors and we’re not going to repeat them here. We have just created a list of expected features of iPad 3 and based on them we will tell you whether it’s worth waiting for iPad 3 or you should buy an iPad 2 right now. Let’s have a look at them:

Expected features of Apple iPad 3:

  1. Retina/HD display: Currently this feature is in iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S and most probably this feature will be there in iPad 3. A retina display not only gives you a very good screen graphics quality but it also enables to run many new applications which are based on Retina display only and gives you a better user experiences of those apps. Although the display of iPad 2 is good too and there’s no other tablet in the market which’s having this Retina display.
  2. A6/Quad core Processor: This thing is also expected in iPad as Apple always upgrades the processor of their new product. If new quad-core processor is there in iPad 3 you should definitely wait for it as this high-speed processor will support so many new application and will give a better graphic quality. It will obviously increase the processing speed hence lesser time to do your tasks.
  3. Siri: The artificial intelligence feature that made the iPhone 4S popular. If it comes in the new iPad then you should definitely wait for it and I think it will be there. But it’s totally your personal choice whether you want Siri in the new iPad or not. Some people are waiting for iPad 3 just because of Siri.
  4. Better Camera: A new 8 M.P camera in iPad 3 is expected but the camera of iPad 2 is good too. I don’t think waiting for iPad 3 just because of a good camera is a nice idea.
  5. Screen Size: Rumors says the new iPad is going to have a 7″ display but I don’t think it’s true, Apple won’t make iPads having screen size smaller than the current size. However they might launch two different iPads for that.
  6. Battery Life: The new iPad will definitely have a better battery life which might increase its cost as well. But if you are getting a nice battery life in a Tablet PC then you should wait for it as battery life of a tablet matters a lot.
  7. Price: Price is a main factor here. The cost of iPad 3 will be either equal to iPad 2 or it will be little expensive. If it will be the same as iPad 2 then Apple will slash the prices of iPad 2 by $100. That means even if you are planning to buy iPad 2 you should wait till the launch of iPad 3.
Well according to these points it’s quite clear that even if you are planning to buy iPad 2, you should wait for some time as you will either get a cheaper iPad 2 or you can get a new iPad with awesome new features. So just wait for some time to get a better deal. Stay connected for more updates on iPad.

How Apple’s Brands Ruled Twitter in 2011

Apple is known for it’s beautifully crafted iPods, iPhones and iPads. Apple’s gadgets and its wizardry with them, is the stuff of tech folklore. There are thousands of articles online which write about how good these gadgets are. Apple is really good at design but something people often not understand is how good it is at marketing its products.

Twitter released a list of top tech topics for 2011 and an incredible  4 topics are related to the Apple brand.

twitter_tech_topics_2011

It is not surprising as anyone who even wants to run a serious contest, seems to give away free iPods, iPhones or iPads which obviously help the brand on Twitter.

That said, four out of ten from a single company shows how brands from Apple rule Twitter.

Apple has always been very intelligent about its marketing plans. Usually they hardly talk about a product before launching it. If you remember Apple had not even confirmed it was working on a tablet until it was shown off by Steve Jobs.

Here is the entire list of hot topics on Twitter for 2011.

Facebook for iPhone 4.0.1 review and screenshots

Facebook just released it’s latest version of Facebook for iPhone application i.e Facebook 4.0.1 which works on both on iPhone and iPad. This newer version is better than the previous one and we have many new features like we have on facebook.com when used from a PC.

We have now a new Notifications tab where we can see all the activities such as likes, comments and wall posts on our profile. Also there’s a new Menu button which shows all games, apps, pages and group links and allows you to use Facebook chat or manage your account. You can also search for your friends as well as games, pages or groups in your new search options.

The major change in the older and this 4.0.1 version of Facebook is that we have a better User Interface now and everything seems conveniently placed and easy to use. You can access anything with few clicks and a good design makes it easy to read and understand. Check out some screenshots of Facebook for iPhone 4.0.1.
