All about Facebook’s new Graph Search

Facebook is all set to introduce a new feature and completely change the way we search for people and stuff on it. It is the Facebook’s new “Graph Search”. Since Facebook is huge and there are more than a billion people and more than 240 billion photos on it, so “Graph Search” will allow users to find people with similar interests like music, places, food, sports e.t.c. According to Facebook “The first version of Graph Search focuses on four main areas — people, photos, places, and interests.” Let’s see how to search for something on it and how to get your beta version.

How to use Facebook’s Graph Search?

This Graph Search seems like (not exactly same) a text version of Apple’s Siri. You can search for people, photos, places, interests and make new connections. Once you start typing it automatically suggests relevant content in a drop down list. You can filter your results using tools on the right sidebar of search results page. Check out some example of searches below:

  • People who like tennis and live nearby.
  • Photos before 1990.
  • Photos of my friends in New York.
  • Sushi restaurants in Palo Alto my friends have liked.
  • Tourist attractions in Italy visited by my friends.

How Graph Search works?

Graph Search looks for search results based on your friend’s posts shared with you or post from other people on Facebook who shared it publicly with everyone. That means search results will be different for different users. Facebook made it very clear that no private posts will be shown in the search results.

Also there will be no change in your current privacy settings. If you don’t want to share your posts like location, tags or posts you can change it on your Activity Log.

When you can start using it?

Currently beta version of “Graph Search” is out but it is available to a small number of people who are using Facebook in English (US). If you wish to use the beta version you can join the waiting list. Open this page and click “Join Waiting List” at the bottom of page.

New Facebook for iOS, Version 5.0 [Review]

Facebook finally updated their Facebook for iOS application i.e. official applications for iPhone, iPad and iTouch with a new look, faster engine and timeline support. The main thing about this update was to provide a faster mobile app and they did it perfectly. As compared to older version of Facebook for iOS this version 5.0 takes very less time to load. They have also removed the “Slide to Refresh” option, now you just have to click on the banner to see new updates. Let’s have a deeper look at the application.

Design:

I like the overall design of the new application. Check out some screenshots of the app:

Speed:

This latest version of Facebook for iOS is very good when it comes to speed i.e. the time it takes to load homepage or profile or some picture and that too without getting crashed again and again.

Messages:

You must be familiar with the application “Facebook Messenger”, it’s a nice application where you can send or receive Facebook inbox messages without accessing whole Facebook news feed. But you don’t need a messenger separately now as Facebook integrated same messenger interface in Facebook for iOS 5.0. Now you can easily send and receive messages to your friends and get to know when they read your message.

Photos:

Again a faster loading feature, now it takes very less time to open a picture than it used to be in earlier versions.

What Else?

Finally this version of Facebook supports “Timeline Profiles”, except that there are some other changes as well. Like, now you don’t need to go to the top and refresh page again and again to read latest updates. It updates automatically and you just have to click on top “New Stories” bar.

Another feature they have added is that you have Instant access to your Notifications. No need to open a separate page to open likes or comments.

Not so good thing:

One thing I don’t like about this update is that the news feed is showing cropped pictures instead of full uploaded pictures. Most of the time it automatically crops the face of the person in the picture. Check the news feed and actual picture size screenshots below:

Another feature which is not present here is small thumbnails of all the pictures uploaded to that album which used to be on the bottom of picture in earlier versions.

Personally I like this version of Facebook mainly because of its performance and User Interface. Don’t forget to share your views with us.

Reason why you should and shouldn’t buy Samsung Galaxy Note

Galaxy Note is a new Phone (or a Tablet may be) by Samsung which is gaining lot of popularity in the gadget world and the main reason behind it is the design of this phone cum tablet. With 5.3″ display screen you can even do your tablet PC or netbook work on this huge phone. But the question is whether you should buy Samsung Galaxy Note or not? Well we have the answer for you.

If you want to read the detailed specification of this phone please click here.

Why you should buy Galaxy Note?

  • Buy it if you can’t afford a Smartphone and a Tablet separately.
  • If you like to buy a handy Tablet which you can carry in your pocket as well.
  • If you always have to stay connected to internet for your work or business (I’m not talking about Facebook and Twitter :P )
  • If you like bulky and flashy gadgets and if you like showing off your gadgets. No one is going to notice an iPhone or Samsung Galaxy S-II in your hand and one can’t ignore such a huge phone like this one.
  • If you are a teenager.
  • If you love android and it’s applications.
  • If you don’t care about the market after buying a gadget. Samsung will definitely cut its prices and will launch a new phone in this segment soon just like Samsung Galaxy S series. They launched S and S-II and now S-III on its way.
  • If you like using a Stylus. This thing hardly matters as you can still use your fingers on Galaxy Note.

Why you shouldn’t buy Galaxy Note?

  • Don’t buy it if you want a stable device that you can use for next 2-3 years.
  • If you don’t like bulky phones, this device looks weird in a pocket of a trouser.
  • If you’re already using a tablet or you’re planning to buy one.
  • If you are buying a phone just to get cool application. In that case go for an Apple device.
  • If you are expecting a high resale value of your phone.
  • If you hate Andriod and just impressed by the looks of this phone.
  • If you are not good in handling delicate stuff. The only delicate part of this phone is the screen. Google is full of queries like “Galaxy Note cracked screen”.
  • Last but not the least, if you’re an Apple iPhone lover then don’t buy it. In that case either wait for iPhone 5 (expected in June 2012) or buy an iPhone 4S or even iPhone 4; that will give you more happiness. :)

Verdict:

Well I can just give you suggestion, the final decision is still yours. Galaxy Note is technically a very good phone. The good feature of this phone is its display and its a bad feature too.

According to me if you are planning to buy a smartphone then go for something else like Samsung S-II or Apple iPhone. And if you’re looking for a Tablet PC then go with Apple iPad. Don’t mix up a phone and a tablet as both are different things with different usage.
