@Amy: You have a great point with respect to apple. A lot of people look at Google taking on Microsoft but I think it just might end up taking on Apple. :-P

Well so far it doesn't seem to have been a misadventure. Short of a few negative reviews, it's been warmly received, and it actually seems to work, which is refreshing for a mobile that tries to integrate the internet as a major feature. Maybe it's because it's actually been developed as an android platform, rather than adding ie onto an ordinary phone.

As for the netbook and Chrome aspect, I think that maybe it's a little old hat thinking with the netbook, they need to get something like the iSlate developed, as Google have caught a whole new net of fish with the Nexus One getting them into hardware. It would be a proper scuffle between Google and Apple if they both brought out similar devices, and let's face it, Google might as well own the internet. Although I adore Apple products, it's about time they had soem class competition, and I think Google could provide that. If they pull their fingers out that is.

People can buy anything which is mktd by AAPL or GOOG. The hardware of the NexusOne is mfd by HTC and its powered by Android. There are rumors that GOOG has partnered with T-Mobile for the NexusOne. As of now it is their first phone and there are no plans to release multiple handsets by GOOG so I think there are very few chances of failure. Chromium OS has a long way to go and by the time it is mature enough, netbooks will be replaced by tablets.
