Apple iPhone 3G for $99 only!

Apple now gives all Gizmo geeks a reason to celebrate by slashing the prices to half for its entry-level iPhones. This means that now you could get an iPhone 3G for just $99! Facing competition from Palm Pre, hopefully this would help broaden iPhone’s appeal to the masses.

It is being speculated that the sales would double up for iPhone due to the reduced prices in the US.

[UPDATE]

The $99 8GB iPhone dilemma!

Please note that this price band is applicable only in the US for now through AT&T.

Why are iPhones exorbitantly priced in India?

Apple says that currently they want to keep exclusivity alive in the region and are not looking at a mass promotion of their iPhones in India. This means that that iPhone prices will continue to be high in India as compared to the US.

Airtel will continue to sell:

  • 8 GB iphone model (Black) for Rs 31000
  • 16 GB iphone model (White & Black) for Rs 36100

Vodafone would continue to sell these 2 versions at appx.Rs.1,500-2500 cheaper than Airtel rates. Both versions will be available only on exclusive 2 year contract with Vodafone. Click here for more information.

This price does not include the data plan cost that a iPhone 3G user will have to pay to its network provider.

sauravjit June 10, 2009

I think new 3G S iphone is the reason for this price cut.

sauravjit June 10, 2009

@Swati

Can I buy an iphone directly from apple in India or I have to take it with any service provider like vodafone or airtel????

Gaurav Dua June 10, 2009

@Sauravjit – You need to buy it either from Airtel or Vodafone. Indian price will be nothing less than Rs 32500 for 16GB and Rs 36500 for 32GB.

Swati June 10, 2009

Just added an update to the post about the price band. The $99 price band is applicable only in the US through AT&T for now.
For the Indian market, as far as the official word goes, the prices are still very high. 🙁
But you never know… maybe in the time to come, we could see a slash in the prices in India as well.

riyaz June 10, 2009

Apple iphone 3G will cost 149$

sauravjit June 10, 2009

@Gaurav Thanks for the info, but its not within my budget 🙁

yeah $99 is fine 😀

Gaurav Dua June 10, 2009

I really love the fact that iPhone is priced so well in India..Because it’s just worth it..Believe me..the only reason i bought an iPhone 3G was because it was handsomely priced thus would assure exclusivity for a while…atleast..and the fact that one can pay developers to create personalized ipa apps depending on my need.

It’s just so awesome..and iPhone’s 3.0 update is scheduled to release on 17th of June which will bring a 100 new features along with it. Damn! That’s enough to rattle butterflies in my stomach..

Nokia is way too far behind in technology and they have an annoying nack of slashing prices from Rs 30,000 to Rs 14,000 in a couple of months…I hate that..

Apple Rocks 🙂

Bapun June 10, 2009

@ Gaurav : I strongly disagree with you. Apple iPhones lack a lots of common features and that make your iphone experience bitter.

1. no flash, no zoom
2. can’t fwd a msg, can’t send MMS, can’t send files using bluetooth
3. no copy/paste functionality, does not support AD2P technology (no stereophonic sounds via headset)
4. can’t keep personalized mp3 songs as ringtone
5. does not support flash/java
6. does not support 2G network

Before couple of months I was thinking about getting a iPhone. But thanks a lot to internet, iPhone is having a large number of limitations than features. finally I ended up buying Nokia N95 and happy with this 🙂

richi June 10, 2009

i think palm pre is better or upcoming sony mobile or nokia or samsung or HTC better than iphone ………..

Gaurav Dua June 10, 2009

@bapun – I already have third party apps which perform every function you listed except the flash and zoom.

You need to get better with iTunes if you gotta set your fav song as your ringtone.

Anyways, All these features will officially and legally be in my iphone on 17th June 09 🙂

Apple is releasing it’s 3.0 OS update and it will add 100 more features to iPhone.

And as far as looks are concerned, nothing beats the iPhone’s Shiny Sexy Black Body..

Guess you jumped to a conclusion a bit too quickly.

Rahul Bansal July 9, 2009

@Gaurav
Thank God you cleared long pending doubts regarding iphone’s so called “missing” features.

Swati June 12, 2009

(Update) FYI:
A recent coverage from Business standard tells us that these entry-level phones will continue to cost some six times the US version (prices are not to come down for the Indian mkt anytime soon).
Leading handset retailers in India said they had not received any information from the two telecom operators, Bharti Airtel and Vodafone-Essar, which are also sole distributors of the handsets in the country. Executives at Bharti Airtel said they were yet to receive any communication from Apple about the price cut. .

The reason iPhones are more expensive in India is that US subscribers get iPhones at a significantly subsidised price from AT&T, the sole provider of the handset in the US. Subscribers have to sign a two-year service contract with AT&T for the service, and the service provider levies a cancellation fee of $175 (Rs 7,000) if the subscription is discontinued.

Bapun June 12, 2009

@ Swati : That’s really sad. Indian mobile operators should think about this as many people won’t (can’t) go for expensive phones. But what if they don’t get a iphone in their pockets, they still have got maa 😛

Swati June 12, 2009

@bapun,
LOL… for “they still have got maa..”

Raj June 27, 2009

iphone 3G price in USA, in US Dollars = 99$ (Rs. 5000 approx). What people do not understand or have no idea that iPhones are sold at $99, $199, $299 only because they are contract based, meaning that no matter what they have to pay for 12 or more months about around $65 (Rs. 3250) per month. Do the math and we are talking about over $1000 (Rs. 50,000).

Hence, the misconception related to the price of iPhone shouldn’t arise also considering the fact that it is high-end device.

I hope now the price of iPhone in India is jusified. We in India have extremely low call rates in comparison to that in U.S. And our mobile operator companies do not offer contract-based subscription planes like they do in the U.S.

Shit
If available for India please notify us mate….
Thanks

Raj June 28, 2009

Apple iPhone 3GS is scheduled to relese on August 09, 2009 in India. It is expected by myself and many others to retain the prices of the old iPhone 3G which will then be sold approx. 5000-6000 rupees cheaper and only the 8 GB version will be available. While as many know 3GS is offered in 16 GB and 32 GB variants.

Now, it should be cleared that no one can get the new 3GS at 5000 rupees. The only way for people in India to get 3GS is from ebay US among the many sites that offer worldwide shipping. The lowest price there for the 3GS is $800(Rs. 40,000). Also, remember while ordering from abroad you are liable to pay custom duties which is different from shipping costs.
