Facebook redesigns the “Like” button

Facebook is pushing a new design to its iconic “Like” button. The “Like” button is now more or less a constant on just about any website, to get visitors sharing links on their own Facebook profiles.

Today, Facebook’s developer blog introduced a new way the “Like” button will show up. The new button has vectorised design. Facebook is also introducing the option of getting websites to use both the “Like” and “Share” button. The two buttons seem similar to people but they are actually very different. The “Share” button allows users to add a comment to the link they are sharing on their timeline. The “Like” button only shares the link on a users timeline.

How does one test the new “Like” button?

The Facebook “Like” and “Share” buttons are used by 7.5 million websites. But rolling out the new buttons to websites over time, Facebook is rolling the new button design to a percentage of users.

This is a bit strange as it might mean that a website owner might not see the newly designed button while visitors to the site might get to see the button. This could be problematic especially if the new design breaks or does not go well with the overall design of a website.

Are you seeing the new “Like” button and do you like it? 😉 Do drop in your comments.

One thing which I still missing is Facebook unlike button, specially for comments which doesn’t make sense. At this moment we see Flag button, but unlike button will add more features to rating system of comments on Facebook. But I’m still very happy with the integration of like button in comments.

Also when some one will hit on like button on your comments, you will get notified, so get ready for more status notification and spend more time on Facebook. According to official blog announcement

So like peanut butter and jelly, we realized these two features would go better together. Starting today, most of you will see a small “Like” button appear underneath comments. We’re rolling this out gradually, so if you don’t see the new button yet you will soon.

Whether it’s a witty remark, a great point in a discussion or a helpful answer to someone’s question, clicking the “Like” button within comments now makes it simple to show your appreciation for all types of content on Facebook.

Has Facebook got it right by changing ‘fans’ to ‘like’ ?

One of the major but expected changes in Facebook has been that there are no Facebook page fans. A fan is converted into a ‘Like’ and that has started a debate amongst Facebook users if doing away with ‘fans’ was the right thing to do.

It has been explained in numerous debates that Facebook prefers us using ‘Like‘ button instead of ‘Become a Fan’ as people are more likely to click on Like than any other option given.

This makes perfect sense of Facebook to start really working on earning revenues from their users.

Pros and Cons of Like Button

  • I think for user owned pages like Facebooknol’s Facebook page we might not really mind the ‘Like button‘ as it will probably get us more followers.
  • When it comes to community user owned page like lets say the community page of a famous book, musician or author then people might prefer to be fans rather than having a ‘Like Button’

I think like previous arguments against changes with Facebook re-designs, this negative vibe to the Like button instead of Fan Pages will also die a natural death.

As long as Facebook has a simple interface that works and allows people to share things easily with their friends and also allow virtual farms and gangsters with Framville and Mafia Wars, people will still flock to Facebook in their millions everyday.
