Indian government is planning to roll out laptops for students just for 500 rupees ($10). According to reports, the laptopβs prototype will be launched by the Indian Human resource minister, Arjun Singh at Tirupati on 3rd of February.
According to the reports published on periodicals and news papers, the technology for these low priced laptops has been developed by the Indian Institute of Science (Bangalore) and the Indian Institute of Technology (Chennai), but will be manufactured by some other private companies and will be rolled out in the Indian market within next six months. It has also been reported that the laptop will be supporting 2 GB of RAM.
So, this initiative would be really a boon for the Indian children having talent and potentiality to work with computer but could not do so because of financial constraints. Lets be optimist and hope to see these low priced laptops (worth $10) soon in the market. π

1 Notebook = 500 rps
100 Notebooks = 50000 rps
If we sell them at far away places at the profit of Rs 100/notebook (Total price – 600 rps), then we can have profit of 10000 rps π
Lol, I just studied maths for my exam so writing like this =)
Yea, there was some news like this about 1-2 years ago, when I was purchasing my laptop, I saw this news in the papers.
Has anyone seen a prototype of this? I feel it quite hard to beleive! We see everyone having a mobile these days. Guess by next year, everyone will be flaunting this notebook! (Of course if this thing is as good as it is promised to be!) Lets hope for the best…
I can’t believe it. It will be a great step of Indian government specially for poor students of India who are good at studies but can’t afford laptops. π
The street price of 2 GB DDR2 RAM is about 1200/- which is much greater than the price of the laptop itself!!! :O
yaar! IT IS A VERY BIG RUMOUR TO ATTRACT INDIANS..
dude! It cnt b possible for congress govt to have a lapy worth rs 500? Hehe nice joke
@bharat
Even I find it hard to believe but such things are possible with subsidy.
Government may be bearing part of production cost and also it will be very low configuration.
Also imagine the scale at which it will be produced. π
The Laptops just have 2 GB memory and are a just a computing device. Nothing more than that π
(As I read in Papers today)
@Gautam
You are right. π
I made complete fool of myself! π
Don’t tell me that the paltop will just hvae a ram and rest al china item..
that will make it’s life less than an laptop actually is used for and also it will become soo common that every one will get it cause it’s just for a matter of 500 bucks.
even the shopkeepers will try and fool you by selling it from their shop..
i Hope the security should be tight and also there should be some constraints to sell the laptop’s to the students..
Therefore a very very poor student will just try to sell it rather than use it for education ..
hope so there should be some tracking device also to find the laptop in case of theft.
Tracking device? Dude! The required chip for tracking itself will cost 10 dollars! But yes, the student may be thinking of making some profit of it by re-selling (if at all there are buyers for it though! π )
