MTNL to become India’s First and Only 3G service provider

mtnl Finally the most hyped third generation service of mobile communications is going to be launched in MTNL which will be the first and only operator to roll out 3G services in India. MTNL has announced to launch 3G services tomorrow (11th December) on the presence of our Prime Minister – Dr. Manmohan Singh. Initially, the service would be made available only for the residents of Delhi and later on it would be expanded to Mumbai and other Indian cities, added a statement in Times of India.

For those who don’t know what exactly 3G services is, it is the third generation services (also called 3G services) for mobile communication system that will enable a 3G compatible handset owner to stream live videos, make video calls and more, apart from being able to make traditional phone calls and use text messaging service. In a broader sense, 3G services enable a user to make faster data transfer of around 5-10 MBPS which is approximately 40 times greater than what 2G & 2.5G services claim to provide. The wiki entry for 3G says:

3G networks enable network operators to offer users a wider range of more advanced services while achieving greater network capacity through improved spectral efficiency. Services include wide-area wireless voice telephony, video calls, and broadband wireless data, all in a mobile environment.

Too much said and discussed about 3G services, all we require to do now is, just watch how successful and useful will 3G be in India and how much additional time will it take other private operators to roll out this modern services.

Though they have rolled out 3G for private sectors but they reserved a large number of channel for them self.

Only thing I wish about BSNL/MTNL is… Somebody should buy them and make them private! 😀

@Deepak
are you sure about MTNL to become ONLY 3G service provider?
I don’t agree on that point a bit, because MTNL don’t have services at all in many places, say Karnataka! And also the link which you referred to says “The launch will put the country on the global 3G map a month ahead of the process to offer private firms 3G licences.” means that license to other service providers are under process.

I mean at this point of time.. MTNL will be the only 3G service provider..

Very soon 3G spectrum will be auctioned and after that private operators too will roll out 3G services. 🙂

i hope BSNL will soon launch 3G so that it will be available all over the country . And govt should not try to privatise these PSUs as there is a fear of very high call rates by private operators once their monopoly is established. One should remeber that incoming call became free only after entry of BSMl/MTNL in market & if they become private the call rates will be high as happened in cement sector

Well I agree with your viewpoint on privatization but just to feel the difference ever walk in to BSNL office.
You will be shocked to see pathetic service they provide.
Actually most government organizations provide very low quality service that I feel it would been better if we go for privatization.
