Solution: "Registry editing has been disabled by your administrator"

If you ever encountered above error, i.e. “Registry editing has been disabled by your administrator” on Windows XP or any other Windows NT Operating system, this may help you!

I have encountered the above error while patching registry. Even regedit command was not working!

Here is a simple solution which worked for me!

  • Click “Start >> Run” or press “[window key + R ]” and type or paste following command exactly as given below. An hit ENTER.

humayun August 17, 2013

HEY! @Rahul. I followed all the steps and i was able to do it for 5 seconds. I cant even open my antivirus or taskmanager!
what should i do?

Zeeshan Aqeel March 29, 2008

Cool Thanks bud! my brains were going out why this is happening, can you explain more on why this happens?

Rahul Bansal March 29, 2008

@Zeeshan
It happened long time back to me.

Still as I remember, the reason was some other program which on execution disables registry editing.
I can’t remember the program name but basically the command above in this post adds key to registry.

Key is – DisableRegistryTools with value 0. This sets disabling to false.

himanshu April 5, 2008

Thanx dude,
But is there a similar script to enable task manager also??

Rahul Bansal April 7, 2008

@himanshu
Wil check and let you buddy! πŸ™‚
Sorry for late reply as I was out.. πŸ™

Rahul Bansal April 12, 2008

@himanshu
Solution for your problem is published here. πŸ™‚
I guess you were getting error: “Task Manager has been disabled by your administrator”

Cheong May 1, 2008

Thanks. But some dll is setting the DisableRegistry to true whenever IE is invoked (invoking FireFox is OK, no problem).

Does anybody knows how to remove the dll invoked by IE startup that writes to the registry to disable regedit?

Rahul Bansal May 3, 2008

@Cheong
First sorry for late reply as I was offline on a long vacation.

Now you can try following few things…

First don’t use IE. I am really wondering why do you need it when you know about Firefox???
Second create a REG file or a shortcut or a batch file, so that you can run command described above everytime you done with IE.
Finally scan your PC for viruses/malwares as it seems infected.

Rest feel free to reply if you have any further problems… πŸ™‚

Chetan December 2, 2008

Thanks

Stephen December 14, 2008

Its not working buddy.. jst a command prompt is comin n going tats it…. when i type regedit or when i press ctrl+alt+del its restarting….

Rahul Bansal December 16, 2008

@Stephen
I am aware of such behavior.
Its problem caused by virus. You need to scan your hard-disk in most probably slave configuration from another PC. One more thing you can do is, use DOS level antivirus if possible.
If all this sounds geek, just format your system drive and reinstall Windows.
Sorry to say this, but this is the only solution I know… πŸ™

@Anuj
Ur system must be infected with virus. I already answered solution in above comments!

Inayat January 15, 2009

Dear Rahul, pls help me out with this idiotic error, registry editing disabled by administrator, i understand its kind of a virus but when I try to run the above thing by copying and pasting it wotn work, I simply get a blackscreen of command prompt for a second and then it vanishes, and I also get task manager disabled. Dude pls help me out.

Rahul Bansal January 15, 2009

@Inayat
Just Google for Task Manager solution. It also needs registry edit hack similar to posted above.
But if these tricks don’t work then you must scan your PC with a good antivirus like NOD-32.

anuj January 16, 2009

hey rahul
my anti-virus is not working nd another anti-virus requires registry editing enabled during installation.

You system must be infected with virus.
Use a good antivirus to scan it completely or just format your drive and install windows again.
