Enable Publishing Google+ Posts on your Orkut Profile

Five years ago, I was not on Facebook or Twitter. MySpace was not something I cared of either. Social networking meant being on Orkut. Orkut was special because as a popular social product in India, it actually ended up getting me in touch with my friends from school.

Lately, I have not checked my Orkut profile for months on end while I check my other social profiles atleast once daily.

Today, Orkut rolled out a new feature that allows users to link their Google+ profiles with their Orkut profiles.

Login to your Orkut account and ideally you should see the option to link it with your Google+ account as seen in the screenshot above.

Now Allow your Google+ public posts to be published on Orkut.

You will notice that your old Orkut profile image has been replaced with the one from Google+.

Is it the end of Orkut?

Considering Orkut still has millions of active users and Google+ is still relatively modestly successful, I did not really think Orkut would be closed down by Google. But options like this one and also other previous features like importing photos from Orkut to Google+ actually allow users to sort of co-opt Orkut into their Google+ profile. Orkut might not close down anytime soon but it seems like the beginning of the end for it.

10 Most Popular Posts This Week! [05 – 11 Dec 2011]

This week was interesting for internet users in India. India’s telecom Minister came under immense criticism because he asked companies like Google and Facebook to remove and monitor content on social networks. This amounted to internet censorship and there was a lot of criticism against such ideas. Google+ circles also made into Gmail and Facebook has finally started rolling out Timelines on user profiles. Posts on these topics were the most popular. 🙂

10 Most Popular Posts This Week! [16- 22 Oct 2011]

The week was interesting to say the least, mainly because Google search had a small outage. We are not surprised that the post on this outage made it into the most popular posts. But as a blogger, it was heartening to see a JQuery tutorial make it to the top as our most popular post. When it comes to popularity, tutorials beat trends. 🙂

Simplest Way to Move Your Orkut Albums to Google+

Three years ago, I would check into my Orkut Account more than a couple of times a day. It went down to once or twice a week when I started using Facebook. Now a days, I visit Orkut, once a month (honestly only to check if something has changed on it).

As a lot of my friends were on Orkut, I had uploaded a few photo albums to share with my friends. There are workarounds to download the albums and then upload them to Google+. Now there is a way to transfer the Orkut album directly to Google+.

Login to your Orkut profile and look up the “Photos” section. There at the top a link to transfer the albums to Google+ account can be seen.

Copy Orkut Albums to Google+

Now you can see all your albums. Just select all the albums you want to move to Google+ and click on the “Import Selected” button.

All your albums are moved to Google+ within seconds and the best part is that by default, the albums can only be viewed by you.

This would probably help as you might not want all your contacts to view the photos your moved from Orkut.

I know in the early days when Google+ was introduced, this option was not available but it seems a useful and much-needed on. You might also want to check up on a Chrome Extension to move Facebook Albums to Picasa.

As a blogger, I have never seen an service outage that lasts almost forever. This week BlackBerry users did not lose BBM and messaging service for a few hours but for literally over 3 days. It was also our most popular story for the week.

Other than that, we also covered the sad news of Dennis Ritchie’s passing away. I must say, that if he had not created C language and Unix Operating System, our world would have still been a lot different. Much of today’s technology is built on his creation.
